Assignment - 1: Instructions

This document provides instructions for Assignment 1 for an Introduction to Communication Systems course. It states that students must submit a single PDF file with scanned handwritten solutions by October 16th, and that copied solutions will be penalized. It includes three questions - the first asks students to calculate sideband frequencies and draw a frequency display for a double modulated signal, the second asks about carrier wave and sideband suppression in AM signals, and the third provides a circuit diagram and asks about signals at various points for a DSB-SC signal detected using a product detector.

Assignment – 1
Instructions: -

❖ Only a single pdf file, which contain color scanned copy of your hand written solutions,
is accepted.
❖ Mobile apps (like ‘CamScanner’) can be used for scanning.
❖ The file name should be your ID NO.
❖ This is individual assignment. Copied solutions will be penalized.
❖ The Due date is Oct-16, 2020.

Questions: -

1. A subcarrier of 70 kHz is amplitude- modulated by tones of 2.1 kHz and 6.8 kHz. The
resulting AM signal is then used to amplitude-modulate a carrier of 12.5 MHz. Assuming 100
percent modulation: -
a. Calculate all sideband frequencies in the composite signal. [5 pts]
b. Draw a frequency domain display of the signal. [2 pts]
c. What is the bandwidth occupied by the complete signal? [1 pt]
2. Determine the percentage power saving when the carrier wave and one of the sidebands are
suppressed in an AM wave modulated to a depth of: - [4 pts]
a. 100%
b. 50%
3. Suppose a DSB_SC signal is transmitted, and it needs to be received using Product Detector
whose diagram is shown below. Let the modulating and Carrier signals be represented as
𝑺𝒎 (𝒕) = 𝑨𝒎 𝑪𝒐𝒔(𝟐𝝅𝒇𝒎 𝒕) ; 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝑺𝒄 (𝒕) = 𝑨𝒄 𝑪𝒐𝒔(𝟐𝝅𝒇𝒄 𝒕):-
a. Drive the formula for the transmitted DSB_SC signal. [2 pts]
b. Drive the signal at the output of the balanced modulator, if the DSB_SC signal in “a”
is being detected using the following Product detector. [4 pts]
c. What will be the signal at the output of the Low-pass filter. [2 pts]
