Auto-Negotiation Signalling method allowing each node to select its optimum operational
mode (e.g., speed and duplex mode) based on the capabilities of the node
to which it is connected.
Backbone Another term for bus - refers to the main link that connects network
nodes. The term is often used to describe the main network connections
composing the network.
Beacon The packet type and packet on the network upon which the port disabling
is enacted.

have the highest priority when propagating though the network. This
ensures the Beacon packet will be transmitted back to the PBQ in a
flooded switch.
Bridge Priority The range of priority values used to determine which device is selected as
Value the Spanning Tree root. This value can range from 0- 65535 for bridge
priority mode 802.1d (decrement by 1) or from 0-61440 for bridge prior-
ity mode 802.1t (decrement by 4096).
CBP (Circuit Breaker Policy) a role/service that disables a port when a Beacon
packet is received from an edge switch or from the tier below.
Circuit Breaker A policy rule that will disable a port that receives an incoming packet of an
outgoing Beacon packet “Loop”.
Circuit Breaker This is used to refer to policy rule that will disable an uplink port that
PBQ/SBQ interfaces two root switches that receives an incoming packet of an outgo-
(CBPBQ/CBSBQ) ing Beacon packet “Loop”. This function is a subset of the Circuit
Breaker.
Core Switch Refers to the main body of switches that provide the network with its

B0700CE – Rev C 1. Introduction
The SSA Chassis managed switch (P0973KK/LN) provides fifty-two SFP 1000Base-X 1Gb
uplink ports.
The switches allow high-performance, full-featured Ethernet switching in small to medium-sized
network applications, as well as high-performance direct end-station connectivity.
Distributed switching architecture with redundant processors and integral load-sharing redundant
power supplies make the SSA Chassis managed switch extremely reliable.
The chassis utilizes add-on power supplies (ordered separately) that requires one separately fused,
15-amp power circuit within 182 cm (6 ft) of the power supply. For redundancy, a second supply
slot is available.
NOTE
Two separate branch circuits are required for the redundant power supply. Requires
two 15 A ac outlets independently fused within 182 cm (6 ft) of power supply, each
outlet uses a separate 15 A power circuit per power supply.
NOTE
The DFE-Gold and DFE-Platinum series blades are neither interchangeable nor
compatible with the S-series chassis switch.
For more information on uplink modules, refer to Figure A-1 in Appendix A “Ethernet Switch
Interconnection Diagrams” and the documentation supplied with the switch.
Visual Indicators
Indicators on the front of the chassis indicate: power failure and fan failure. Indicators for each
port and uplink indicate: port enabled and link activity, data collisions and diagnostic failure.

Power Supplies
(P0973KE or P0973LJ)
The S4 Chassis managed switch (P0973KD) (Figure 1-5) consists of three usable slots within a
4-slot chassis with four empty power supply locations and a front mounted fan assembly. The
3-slots can be populated with Ethernet blades/modules, depending on the needs of the user.
Slot 2 in the switch (see Figure 1-5) must be populated with an S4 S-series Network I/O Fabric
module (P0973KG, P0973KG Rev. B, or P0973LP) for switch operations. The I/O Fabric mod-
ule is the master blade for the switch, controlling the other slot locations. To achieve proper
failover in the event of an I/O Fabric module failure, Slot 3 cannot be populated.
The P0973KD switch provides up to one hundred ninety two SFP uplink ports depending on the
number of blades and modules installed.
The switch allows high-performance, full-featured Ethernet switching in medium to large-sized
network applications. Direct end-station connectivity is possible when using the P0973JE 100Mb
GBIC.
The chassis utilizes a 1200/1600 or 930/1600 watt power supplies (ordered separately) that
requires one separately fused, 20-amp power circuit (for P0973KE) or a 15-amp power circuit (for
P0973LJ) within 182 cm (6 ft) of the power supply. For redundancy, four supply slots are
available. The third and fourth supply slots are used for Power over Ethernet (PoE) functionality
(not supported on The MESH control network).
For a list of the switch modules supported by the S4 Chassis managed switch, refer to Table 1-2,
“S4 Chassis Managed Switch Modules/Uplink Modules,” on page 9.

B0700CE – Rev C 1. Introduction
NOTE
The DFE-Gold series blades or DFE-Platinum series blades are neither interchange-
able nor compatible with the S-series chassis.
For more information on uplink modules, refer to Figure A-2 in Appendix A “Ethernet Switch
Interconnection Diagrams” and the documentation supplied with the switch.
Media Converter
The media converter provides a way to connect devices that use 100 Mb CAT5-STP copper cable
(RJ-45 connectors) to a device that uses 100FX multimode fiber optic cable. The media converter
allows connection between copper and fiber devices. A media converter allows you to connect a
workstation or a controller to an Ethernet switch that is not equipped with fiber optic ports, while
gaining the benefits of extended range isolated fiber optic transmission.
Refer to Media Converter Installation and Configuration Guide for Control Networks (B0700CP)
for all information on the media converter types available for use with these switches.
Switch Management
For The MESH control network, the network management module for the Fast Ethernet
switches, provides a menu-driven or Command Line Interface (CLI) system configuration pro-
gram with management capability. See Chapter 4 “Switch Configuration” for further details.
Appendix A “Ethernet Switch Interconnection Diagrams” contains details on expansion and
cabling options.

2. Site Planning
This chapter describes the steps that should be taken and the options that should be considered
when planning the inclusion of the S-series Chassis switches in The MESH Control Network.
The design of each implementation of The MESH Control Network is different, and depends on
the needs and requirements of the individual site. The following paragraphs provide the informa-
tion necessary to help network designers to plan the control network that meets the needs of their
specific site.
Refer to The MESH Control Network Architecture Guide (B0700AZ) for details about overall site
planning.
11
B0700CE – Rev C 2. Site Planning
♦ The SSA Chassis managed switch may be mounted in a 19” rack, such in the G50
Server enclosure.
♦ If the SSA P0973KK is installed in an enclosure other than the G50 Server enclosure,
be aware that the air flow for the S-series switches is left to right, which is different
from other MESH Control Network switches and this may impact the air circulation
in the enclosure.
NOTE
The S-series P0973LN air flow has also changed from front to back to improve the
switch's cooling.
♦ To install the SSA Chassis managed switch as a rack mounted unit using the SSA rail
kit (shipped with the SSA switch), ensure that the rack used will support the unit and
that the rack will remain stable after installation.
! WARNING
DO NOT use the P0973LN rack mount with the P0973KK chassis. This rack
mount will cause the unit to overheat due to airflow restrictions.
Desktop Installation
For desktop installation, you must attach the adhesive rubber feet to the bottom of the SSA
switch.
To attach the rubber feet to the bottom of the SSA switch, proceed as follows:
1. Place the SSA switch upside down on a sturdy, flat surface.
2. Remove the adhesive backing from the four rubber feet.
3. Adhere the rubber feet to the round, recessed areas on the bottom of the SSA switch.
12
2. Site Planning B0700CE – Rev C
For a four-post rack installation, the SSA rail kit requires that the front to back spacing of the rack
posts be within the range of 62 cm (24.5 in) to 83 cm (32.5 in).
In a four-post rack, the SSA switch is flush-mounted on the rails supplied in the SSA rail kit and
secured to the front posts of the rack. If desired, you can secure the rear of the SSA switch to the
rails.
To install the SSA switch in a four-post rack:
1. Extend the right and left rails to fit the outside dimensions of the rack posts.
The rails in the SSA rail kit are shipped with the rail extensions attached. If the rails
do not slide easily, loosen the screws that secure the rail extensions to the main rails.
2. Position the right and left rails, which are labeled on the inside of each rail, in the rack
with the bottom lip of the rail facing into the rack.
3. Attach each rail to the rack posts with two screws in the front and two screws in the
back in the top and bottom screw holes. See Figure 2-1.
NOTE
The SSA rail kit does not include screws for attaching the rails to the rack posts.
Rack Posts
Figure 2-1. Attaching Rails from SSA Rail Kit to Rack Posts
4. If necessary, tighten the screws that secure the rail extensions to the ends of the rails as
shown in Figure 2-1. These screws must be tight before you place the SSA switch in
the rails.
13
B0700CE – Rev C 2. Site Planning
5. From the front of the rack, slide the SSA switch onto the rails until the mounting ears
of the SSA switch are against the front posts of the rack.
6. Secure the front of the SSA switch to the rack by screwing the customer-supplied rack
screws in the mounting ears on the right and left front of the SSA switch. See
Figure 2-2.
7. (Optional) Secure the rear of the SSA to the rails. See “Securing the SSA Switch to the
Rear of the Rails” on page 19.
14
2. Site Planning B0700CE – Rev C
Rack Mounting the SSA Switch in a Two-Post Rack (18 Cm (7 In) Posts)
In a two-post rack with 18 cm (7 in) posts, the SSA switch is flush-mounted in the rack and
secured in the SSA rails to the front and rear of the posts. In this procedure, you need to modify
the rails by removing the rail extensions and attaching the mounting brackets, which are supplied
in the rail kit.
To rack mount the SSA in a two-post rack with 18 cm (7 in) posts:
1. Remove the extensions from each rail by unscrewing the rail clamps. See Figure 2-3.

The 1000Base-BX Fiber uplink (ISL) Mini-GBIC modules with Simplex LC connectors
(P0973JB/KM/KQ and P0973JC/KN/KR) are shown in Figure 2-10. 1000Base-BX is a version
of Fast Ethernet over a single strand of optical fiber (unlike 1000Base-LX, which uses a pair of
fibers). Simplex single-mode fiber is used, along with a special multiplexer (Mini-GBIC) which
splits the signal into transmit and receive wavelengths. The wavelengths used for transmit and
receive are 1310 nm, 1490 nm or 1590 nm. The Mini-GBIC modules on each side of the fiber
are not the same device, as the one transmitting P0973JC/KN/KR Mini-GBIC module “down-
stream” (from the core of the network to the edge) uses the 1490 nm or 1590 nm wavelengths,
and the “edge” transmitting P0973JB/KM/KQ Mini-GBIC module “upstream” uses the 1310 nm
or 1490 nm wavelengths with a distances of 10 km (6.2 mi), 40 km (24.8 mi) and 1490 nm
wavelength with a distances of 120 km (74.4 mi).

1. (Multimode only for the P0972YQ) The maximum drive distance (up to 2 km) depends on
the quality of the installed multimode fiber-optic cable segment. Use the Link Power Bud-
get to calculate the maximum cable length of the attached segment. The Link Power Budget
must not exceed those specified in this table. The P0972YQ input power must not exceed -
3 dBm. Otherwise, saturation could occur. Note: The input power is not selectable.
2. P0973JB/JC, P0973KM/KN and P0973KQ/KR are bi-directional Mini-GBICs. Both
upstream and downstream switches transmit on the same fiber but at different frequencies.
When ordering these Mini-GBICs, you must acquire a matching pair, one of each type. For
a matching pair, order kits P0973JD (10 km (6.2 mi)), P0973KP (40 km (25 mi)), or
P0973KS (120 km (74.6 mi)) which include one of each of the required modules.

3. Installation
This chapter describes the steps necessary to install the S-series Chassis switches as part of The
MESH Control Network.
Installation of the Ethernet switches in The MESH Control Network consists of locating the
individual components and then making connections between them using fiber optic or copper
cable.
! CAUTION
If a blade, uplink expansion module, or GBIC port is to be added or removed from
the switch configuration, a complete software reconfiguration of the switch is neces-
sary after it is installed or removed.
37
B0700CE – Rev C 3. Installation
38
4. Switch Configuration
This chapter describes the steps necessary to configure the S-series Chassis switches as part of The
MESH Control Network.
Logging In
By default, the S-series switches are configured with three user login accounts:
♦ ro for Read-Only access
♦ rw for Read-Write access
♦ admin for superuser access to all modifiable parameters.
39
B0700CE – Rev C 4. Switch Configuration
The default password is set to a blank string. For information on changing these default settings,
refer to The MESH Control Network Operation, and Switch Installation and Configuration Guide
(B0700CA, Rev. H or later) document, in the section “Changing Switch Password and Settings.”
Configuration Requirements
All managed switches require configuration before they are added to The MESH Control Net-
work.
! CAUTION
Switches should be configured off line before they are connected to The MESH
Control Network.
! CAUTION
Do not mirror active ports to other used ports. Doing so results in an excessive
increase in the traffic levels routed by the switches.
NOTE
When adding a switch or blade to the network, clear the NVRAM, or return the
switch to the Factory Default Configuration to obtain default settings before con-
figuring the switch.
NOTE
Uplink ports should be installed and configured first. Otherwise, configured infor-
mation may be lost when the uplink ports are installed.

B0700CE – Rev C 4. Switch Configuration
Edge Switches
An edge switch is a switch which will not be configured as a root or backup bridge. The edge
switch usually interfaces Foxboro Evo devices (Control Processors, FCMs, and so forth) to the
root switches. Multiple root switches can be configured to take over as roots by adjusting the
Bridge Priority Value. However, normally only two roots exist, primary and backup root switch,
all other switches are defined as edge switches.
Resetting Password
The switch’s Command Line Interface (CLI) locks out after three incorrect password attempts
and remains locked out for 15 minutes. The Reset Password jumper remains non-functional
for those 15 minutes.
NOTE
Power must be applied to the unit before the 15 minute lockout can expire.
If you forget the switch’s login password, use the Reset Password jumper as described in the fol-
lowing procedure.
