This exercise is a short recall on the reproductive system lesson. Please answer
the questions on the space provided.

1. What takes over after the corpus luteum deteriorates?


- Placenta
2. How long does the corpus luteum remain active?

4. Maternal changes of the cervix:
- Goodell’s sign

5. Maternal changes of the vagina:

Below is the review of the system changes of the woman during pregnancy;
6. Maternal changes of the cardiovascular system: Heart
- Maternal heart is pushed upward and laterally to the left
- Increased maternal heart size
7. Maternal changes of the respiratory system
- Increased oxygen intake
- Diaphragm is displaced upwards by 4cm
- Diameter of thorax increases 2 cm
- Hormones facilitate the relaxation and expansion of muscles and
cartilage
- Chest circumference increases about 15cm
- Rib cage expands to accommodate outward expansion of lungs and
uterus

8. Hemodynamic changes
- Increase in blood volume
- Increase in stroke volume
- Increased cardiac output
- Reduced systemic vascular resistance and blood pressure
9. Gastrointestinal changes
- Stomach and intestines are displaced upwards and laterally by
enlarging uterus.
- Decreased or sluggish motility from the effects of progesterone on
smooth muscle.
- Distention and hypotonia or relaxation of gallbladder
10. Renal system
- Increased blood flow to the kidneys
- Progesterone causes relaxation of ureter
- Increase in renal plasma flow
- Bladder is compressed by the weight of growing fetus
