1. The army squad tent shown in the figure has a roof with
trapezoidal sides whose bases form a rectangle 1 ¾ ft. by 2 ft. at
the top and a rectangle 14 ft. by 16 ft. at the bottom. If the height
of the roof is 8 ft., find the surface area of canvas in the roof.
(Neglect the rounded surface at the top and the entrance opening.)
2. The flowerpot shown in the sketch has a uniform thickness of 3 in. and
is 1 ft. high. Find the amount of material necessary to construct 1000
such pots. (Neglect the drain in the bottom.)
3. A lamp shade is in the form of a frustum of a cone with slant height 7 in., radii of bases 3 in. and 7 in.
respectively. How much material is used in its construction if ¼ in. is allowed for the seam?
4. Find the expense, at 60 cents a square foot, of polishing the curved surface of a marble column in the shape
of the frustum of a right circular cone whose slant height is 12 ft. and the radii of whose bases are 3 ft. 6 in.,
and 2 ft. 4 in., respectively.
5. At what distance from the base of a right circular cone must a plane be passed parallel to the base in order
that the volume of the frustum formed shall be three-fifths of the volume of the given cone?
6. The railroad fill shown in the figure has sloping sides which rise vertically ½ ft. for each foot horizontally.
The top of the fill ABCD is horizontal and the ends are vertical. The depth of the fill at each of the points
A,B,C,D is indicated in the figure. Find the cost of making this fill at 75 cents per cubic yard.
7. The block of granite shown in the figure has as lower base the
horizontal triangle CDE. The upper edge AB is horizontal and
point D lies in the plane ABC. Find the volume.
Hint. The prism can be divided into two truncated triangular prisms in two
ways (see figure). Apply the formula of the example to each pair, and add
the results thus obtained. The sum will be twice the volume of the given
prism.
9. Fig. (d) represents a truncated triangular prism. Angle BAC = 90°. The lateral
edges AD, BE, CF are perpendicular to the base ABC. If AB = 8 in., AC = 6 in.,
AD = 10 in., BE = 6 in., CF = 8 in., find: (a) the lateral area; (b) the total area;
(c) the volume; (d) angle EDF; (e) the angle ABF; (f) the area of triangle ABF.
