A 30-station transfer line is proposed to manufacture a component with a maximum production rate of 90 parts/hour. It is estimated that breakdowns will occur with a frequency of 0.18 breakdowns per cycle. A storage buffer is recommended in automated production lines to handle fluctuations in production and breakdowns. Reasons for including a storage buffer include accommodating differences in production rates between upstream and downstream processes and allowing downstream processes to continue running during upstream breakdowns or adjustments.
