Bringing Mobile Phones at School For Academic, Research and Other Schoolworks

Mobile phone use in schools has become controversial, with debates around both the benefits and drawbacks. While phones allow safety and communication, they can also be a distraction. The author argues that if used appropriately for educational purposes like research, phones should be allowed. Rules would prevent disruption, like storing phones away during class and only using apps or internet for schoolwork. Overall, phones could serve as learning aids if policies regulate proper usage and prevent abuse.

Part I
INTRODUCTION

Most of the students must be required to bring mobile phones for their research,
studying and contact for their family in the event of an accident. Mobile phone use in
schools by students has become a controversial topic debated by parents and teachers.
Parents who support the use of cell phones believe that these phones are essential for
safety by allowing children to communicate with their parents and guardians.
Opponents of students using mobile phones during school believe that cell phones
cause disruption and may be used inappropriately such as by cheating on tests, taking
inappropriate photographs, and playing mobile games.

Rather than paying attention to teachers, students are spending more time
distracted by their phones. To prevent distractions caused by mobile phones, some
schools have implemented policies that restrict students from using their phones during
school hours. I think that they can have a phone but they can’t use it in class. In my
opinion if students will use it for something good then they should be able to use cell
phones in school.

A phone can be used for many educational things like research, projects,
calculators, and even putting in important dates when a homework assignment or a
project is due. You can also use a phone to call or text your parents if maybe you forgot
your lunch at home, need lunch money so you can eat at school, or let them know that
you have tutorials after school that day. There are many things that phones are useful
for Cell phones can keep you safe. Believe it or not cell phones can save your life.
Technology in schools is becoming a common academic feature throughout many grade
levels and age groups.
As for my opinion, there are two pros allowing students to bring mobile phones at
school , which is act as convenient communication tool and learning aid, and one con
which is increasing in criminal cases. With the development of technology, each
purpose of usage its pros and cons. There are some advantages in allowing students to

bring mobile phones at school which is the act as convenient communication tool and
learning aids . Firstly, as a communication tool, students can use mobile phones to keep
in touch with their parents or friends while they are at school.

As a small tool, mobile phones are very convenient to the students to carry it
around the school in their pocket or bag. Moreover, students can use mobile phones as
an emergency aid for contacting the authorities. As we know nowadays that there are a
lot of illegal activities such as bully and theft , so by allowing the students to bring
mobile phones to school, they can use it to contact authorities if they are in danger
during school hour.

Part II
PURPOSE

The purpose of bringing mobile phones at school are. First mobile phones can be
used as reminders, students take more than one subject in a day, and they have loads of
assignments which they have to finish on time. So it is very important for these students
to use cell phones as reminding gadgets. I remember when I was in Junior High , I used
to have a tight schedule, we used to get lots of homework and I used to find it difficult
to balance my time. So sometimes I could submit my homework when it was too late.
But with the help of mobile phones student’s life is made simple, It can be used by
teachers to text reminding messages about homework or tests.

Second is mobile phones can be used to access the internet, students need
internet to do research. So it is logical if students are allowed to use cell phones in
school. All smartphones can access the internet, which can help students do extensive
personal reading. Schools can use computers in classrooms, but encourage phone usage
out of the classroom. Schools can provide free wifi internet at school so that their
students can easily access the internet while at school. Most important educational
websites like Wikipedia and Google can be accessed via mobile phones.

Third, alternative to textbooks, many textbooks are not the most relevant sources
of information. Today’s generation has grown accustomed to instant, updated
information. Textbooks can’t provide students with the latest information like a mobile
devices can. Also, having digital textbooks on their mobile devices keeps students more
organized and gives them easy access to their materials. The old days of looking for
information in encyclopedias are long gone.

And Lastly having mobile devices in the classroom allows students instant access
to the latest news, information, statistics, etc. Virtually every question they have is at
their fingertips, keeping them connected with what’s going on around them and
ensuring they are always well informed with the most up to date information.
Part III

DESCRIPTION
This paper takes as its starting point the large and relatively recent literature on
mobile phones, That mobile phones can also be used as learning aids at schools. As
stated above, the technology of mobile phones nowadays is very advanced and
sophisticated. Thus, students can be used this technology to aid them and look for
information about knowledge in the faster ways.

There are lots of functions or applications such as calculator, maps, internet,

dictionaries, notes and other kind of app that can help students to learn more at school
and can assist students in their learning process at school. That’s why Deputy
Education Minister, Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong said that in 2013, students will be allowed
to bring mobile phones and IT gadgets to school after the rules and regulations under
the Education Act 1996 are amended. It is suggested to gain more and faster knowledge
during school hour

Part IV

SUPPORT
By using mobile phones at school should not be abused by the students. Today,
the average child has a cell phone by middle school and if the school allows it, they will
be in the student’s possession during the school day. This is a debatable topic, phones
being allowed in school. I have asked hundreds of parents, teachers and administrators
and this would be the rules in using mobile phones at school to prevent interruption to
the teachers and other school personnels:

 Students have no business using a cell phone in school because they should be
learning in class,
 Students should be allowed to use cell phones when they have down time like
lunch, recess, etc. so they are kept busy.
 Cell phones must be set on silent mode, in a backpack during classroom time
and can only be accessed during lunch or recess.
 Cell phones must be stored away during classroom time and during any tests
that are administered throughout the school year.
 Schools are not responsible for any damage or lost cell phones during the school
hours.
 Schools have the right to confiscate cell phones if they are distracting to the
learning environment (and returned to the student at the end of the day).
 If mobile devices are being used for educational purposes, specific
programs/apps will be allowed to be accessed during class.
 All students are required to read, sign and acknowledge the cell phone policy
before the school year starts.
