Week 6 Assignment 6 Solution Full Marks 20

Q.1 As per IS specification, the splice connection should be designed for a

force of at least k times the member design capacity in tension or the
design action whichever is more. Here the value of k is 1
(b) 0.3
Sol: Lec 28, Slide 3
Q.2 The design shear capacity of bolts carrying shear through a packing or
filler plate (with the thickness of tpk) in excess of 6 mm shall be decreased by a
factor 1
(a) pkg = 1-0.0125tpk

Sol: Lec 28, Slide 3

Q.3 Calculate the number of M20, grade 4.6 bolts required for the connection
of the member AD as shown in the figure. (Thickness of gusset plate = 12
mm, Assume pitch and gauge distance 60 mm and 40 mm respectively)
4

(b) 3
Sol: Shear strength of M20 bolts in single shear
𝑓𝑢𝑏
(𝑛𝑛 𝐴𝑛𝑏 +𝑛𝑠 𝐴𝑠𝑏 ) (400/√3)×(1×245)
√3
= = = 45.3 × 103 N = 45.3 kN
𝛾𝑚𝑏 1.25

Shear strength of M20 bolts in double shear = 45.3 × 2 = 90.6 kN.

Assuming pith and gauge distance 60 mm and 40 mm respectively.
kb = 40/(3 × 22), 60/(3 × 22) - 0.25, 400/410, 1 = 0.606
Net force in member, AD = 450 – 200 = 250 kN
Bearing strength of bolts on 12 mm thick gusset plate = = 2.5 × d × t × kb × fub/γmb
= 2.5 × 20 × 12 × 0.606 × 400/1.25 = 116.35 × 103 N = 116.35 kN
Strength of angle per pitch length =
0.9×𝑓𝑢 ×𝐴𝑛 0.9×410×[(60−22)×12]
𝑇𝑑𝑛 = = = 134.6 × 103 N
𝛾𝑚1 1.25
= 179.48 kN
So the bolt value = 90.6 kN (i.e., lesser of 90.6 kN, 116.35 kN and 179.48 kN)
No. of bolts required = 250/90.6 = 2.75 ≈ 3

Q.4 Calculate the thickness of the splice plate. The connection is subjected to
a tensile force 250 kN and the design strength of the section is 500 kN.
3

(b) 3 mm
Sol: Let the thickness of splice plate is t.
Thus the strength of splice plate will be:
0.9×410×[(200−20×2)×𝑡×2]
= 94.5t × 103 N = 94.5t kN
1.25

The splice will be designed for 0.3 × 500 kN = 150 kN or the factored tensile load
of 250 kN whichever is more.
250
Thus the thickness of the splice plate will be: 𝑡 = 94.5 = 2.64 mm ≈ 3 mm

Q.5 The failure mode in which an axially loaded compression member may
fail is by 1
(d) all of these.
Soln: Lecture-29, Slide-3
Q.6 Critical stress for elastic buckling of Euler column should be
1

𝝅𝟐 𝑬
(b)
𝝀𝟐
Soln: Lecture-29, Slide-7

Q.7 The effective length of a structural steel compression member of length L

effectively held in position and restrained against rotation at one end
but neither held in position nor restrained against rotation at the other
end, is 1

(d) 2.0 L

Soln: Lecture-29, Slide-14

Q.8 The imperfection factor(α) for buckling class ‘b’ is given by 1
(c) 0.34
Soln: Lecture-30, Slide-4

Q.9 An ISMB 300 is to be used as a compression member. Considering the

buckling about y-y axis, the corresponding buckling class as per IS 800:
2007 will be 2

(b) b
Soln: For ISMB 300
Depth of the section, h = 300 mm
Width of the flange, bf = 140 mm
Thickness of the flange, tf = 12.4 mm
ℎ 300
Now, 𝑏 = 140 = 2.14 > 1.2 and tf = 12.4 mm ≤ 40 mm
𝑓

As per table 10, IS 800 :2007, considering buckling about y-y axis,
Buckling class of the section is ‘b’
Q.10 The allowable slenderness ratio of the elements in built-up section is
1
(d) 50
Soln: Lecture-30, Slide-11

Q.11 Which one of the following is a compression member? 1

(b) strut
Ref: The principal compression in crane is called Boom. (lec-29, slide-2)

Q.12 The critical slenderness ratio (𝜆𝑐 ) of a axially loaded initially straight pin-
ended column with 𝑓𝑦 = 250 MPa is 2
(d) 88.85
Ref: See lecture no-29, slide no-8
Q.13 The design compressive stress of an axially loaded compression member
in IS: 800-2007 is given by 1
(d) Perry Robertson formula
