Tutorials On Sanitary Engineering-1

This document contains 6 questions regarding the calculation of wastewater discharge from cities and towns. It provides data on population sizes, city areas, water supply rates, rainfall intensities, land use percentages, and runoff coefficients. The questions require using this data to calculate dry weather discharge, stormwater discharge, design discharge for combined and separate sewer systems, and discharge from storms of different durations. Formulas used include rational method to determine stormwater discharge and assumptions about wastewater generation rates.

Chapter – 2, Quantity of Wastewater

Q (1). City with Population 100,000 has 150 hector Area. It is assumed that 80 % water supply is
converted to sewage and discharge from infiltration to sewage is 100 liters per hector per day.
Determine the Dry Weather Discharge on sewer line, if water demand for city is 135 LPCD.
(Ans. = 10815 m3/d)
Q (2). Determine the storm water discharge for a town of 250 ha. With maximum rainfall
intensity is 35 mm/hr. The catchment area and corresponding permeability coefficients are
given below:

Type of surface Percentage of area Permeability coeff.

Gardens and open space 25 0.85
Built-up surface 45 0.10
Unpaved road 15 0.60
Vacant plot 15 0.70

After 20 year all vacant plot and 10 percent of Gardens and open space will be converted to
built-up area what will be the new discharge. Use rational method to determine discharge for
both case.
(13.31 m3/s, 15.6 m3/s)
Q (3). A city having projected population of 30,000 residing over an area of 20 hectares, Find
the design discharge for the combined sewer for the following data:
A. Rate of water supply = 150 LPCD
B. Run-off Coefficient = 0.4
C. Time of concentration = 30 minutes
Also find ratio of DWF to WWF and recommend type of sewer line to be adopted
(Ans: 559 lps)

Q (4). The city having populations 200,000 covers an area of 200 ha. The area and
corresponding Run-off coefficients are given below

Type of surface Percentage of area Run-off coeff.

Pavement and yards 25 0.85
Roof surface 35 0.80
Unpaved street 15 0.30
Gardens and lawns 25 0.15
Assume:
i. Rate of water supply = 135 LPCD ( 80 % of which turns to wastewater )
ii. Time of concentration = 25 min.
iii. Peak flow is three times the DWF
If sewer line has to be design for design period of 35 year and populations growth rate of city is
1.35 % then what will be the future design discharge (take, peak factor = 2.75) for a). Separate
sewage system b) Combined sewage system & c) Partially separate system sewage system
Ans: a) 1.1 m3/s, 7.24 m3/s
b) 8.34 m3/s
c) 7.3 m3/s, 1.04 m3
Q (5). An area of 25 hectors is served by a sewer line with Run-off coefficient 0.75. The area
may be subjected to three storms X, Y and Z of equal frequency of occurrence. The duration of
storm X is 20 minutes, that of Y is 30 minutes and that of Z is 45 minutes. Time of concentration
of 30 minutes, calculate the discharge due to each storms. (Ans X= 0.88 m3/s, Y= 1.06 m3/s & Z
= 0.81 m3/s).
Q (6) Calculate the Design discharge for a sewer from following data:
i. Projected populations = 75000
ii. Area = 8 km2
iii. Rate of w/s = 100 LPCD
iv. Permeability factor = 60 %
v. Rainfall duration = 15 minutes
vi. Time of flow = 15 minutes
vii. Time of entry = 5 minutes
viii. Assume that 80 % of supplied water converted as wastewater and minimum
demand is 3 times average demand

(Ans. = 22.73 m3/s)
