1. Choose two systems of the body. Describe and elaborate on the effects of stress on the

systems.

● Cardiovascular System

● Digestive System

Stress can be very harmful on the systems of the body and its effects may not caught our

attention that much and sometimes we don’t realize that these are the effects already. Stress as

we all know is a threat to homeostasis and the systems of the body are widely affected by it. I

chose the Digestive and Cardiovascular system. The effects of stress on the Digestive system can

be so common, since the body can not manage stress at the same time digest food

simultaneously. Reflux, Heartburn, Gut Immunity and Peristalsis are only some of the effects of

stress where it can cause an individual constipation because of the shutting down of the digestive

system, some may also lead into gaining more weight. Moreover, in Cardiovascular, emotional

and physical stress have a negative impact as well as when it all happens at once. Acute stress as

an example or the type if stress that is short term and the exposure may not be that long, such as

traffic jams and even meeting a deadline, it may result to difficulty of breathing and palpitations.

Stress hormones have a damaging effect on the coronary (heart) where in it can cause increase

oxygen demand, high blood and even worse stroke and heart failure.
2. What are your views/understanding of how health is defined? Has it changed after we

discussed the Biopsychosocial model? Why or why not?

As basically defined by the wikipedia and merriam webster as well as The World Health

Organization, Health is a state of being free from illness and injury. Yes, it has changed mainly

because when we think of the term health, we always thought of it as something in the field of

Science, we disregard other factors as told by the biopsychosocial model such as behavioral or

psychological, biological and even social factors that contribute to a certain state of a person.

When we say biological, it tackles our genetics and the hereditary traits we get from our family

while Psychological/Behavioral talks about the stress, lifestyle and health beliefs, basically this

one totally depends on yourself on how are you going to handle your life. And lastly, social

factors, this basically includes culture, family support and what not. The three factors can be

interconnected to each other.

3. How does the extended BPS model explain the relationship between health and illness?

The extended biopsychosocial model explains the relationship of health and illness by

elaborating and offering a new framework in which even ecological factors are therefore

included. The extended biopsychosocial model put all biological, social and psychological

dimensions of health and illness into simultaneous considerations by the health Psychologists or

medical doctors in both assessing and treating the patient. The Biopsychosocial model was

introduced by George Engel in order to further discuss that health and illness may come from

more than one cause. By seeing all the factors, Biological, Psychological and Social, now even
the ecological, Clinicians would be able to diagnose a patient’s illness or health status without

just basing it on one aspect..
