Introduction To Ergonomics

Ergonomics is the scientific study of human interaction with tools, machines, workstations, and environments. The goal of ergonomics is to optimize the well-being and performance of humans within systems by designing tools and workspaces that fit human capabilities, limitations, and needs. Key principles of ergonomics include fitting the job to the worker rather than forcing the worker to fit the job, and designing systems that account for human factors like usability, safety, and comfort. The focus of ergonomics is on the interaction between humans and the machines or elements they interface with at work.

ERGONOMICS

INTRODUCTION

 Human Factor Ergonomics

Describes:

How best to design tools and machine to optimize these interaction and the effect of ambient
environment conditions when the interaction take place.

(Basically, Ergonomics- is a principle how to design tools and machines and optimize these
interactions between the user and systems.)

WHAT IS ERGONOMICS - Ergonomics and human factor is a scientific discipline concerned with
the understanding of interaction.

Among humans and other elements and the profession that applies: THEORY, PRINCIPLES DATA
and methods to design in order to optimize human well- being and overall system performance.
(The International Ergonomic Association, 2000)

ERGONOMICS = also known as WORK DESIGN.

Ergonomics - also concerned how to improve the PERFORMANCE and to improve the
INTERACTIONS of humans to other elements by designing tools and interaction or workstation.

GREEK WORD:

ERGONOMICS - : “ERGOS” = work

“ NOMOS” = law
ERONOMICS = The Law of Work.

“Ergonomics is the study of people at work to MAKE THINGS BETTER”.

PRINCIPLE:

“ Ergonomics is fitting the job to a worker”

Ex: Workstation is not adjustable to a worker, also the workstation is to fit to a worker skills.

What is HFE?

 Human Factors Engineering

The study of how people use system or equipment in order to design, develop and create technology
that is safer and more effective etc...

(Design and develop a tool for safer of workers or operators.)

PURPOSE:
“The primary purpose of human factors engineering and ergonomics is to DESIGN”.

(* Not workers adjust to a workplace it should be the workplace fitted a workers.)

BRIEF HISTORY OF ERGONOMICS

 1857 - ergonomics first used in a POLISH NEWSPAPER

 WOJCIECH
JASTRZEBOWSKI
 WORLD WAR II - the increase working hours and the added strain created the
conditions for initiations of interdisciplinary investigations to improve
the quality of human activities.
 1949 - term “Ergonomics” was proposed and its current official definition is
 Prof. HUGH “Scientific Discipline”concerned with the understanding of the
MURRELL interaction among humans and other elements of a system.
 1950 - The named “ERGONOMICS” officially accepted.
 1957 - The HUMAN FACTORS SOCIETY was formed.
 1852 - The ERGONOMIC SOCIETY was formed in Britain with people
from psychology, biology, physiology and design.
 WORLD WAR II - prompted greater interest in human machine interaction as the
efficiency of sophisticated military equipment (i.e Airplanes) could be
compromised by bad or confusing design. Design concepts of fitting
the machine to the size of soldier and logical and understandable
control buttons evolved.

MODERN ERGONOMICS

Contributes DESIGN and EVALUATION of the work systems and products.

ERGONOMIST - has important role to play in conceptualizing, detailing the design, prototyping and
also evaluating phases of a existing products and especially a facilities.

(He must able to IDENTIFY the problem, ANALYZE and SUGGEST improvements in the form of
solutions.)

SCOPE AND FOCUS:

FOCUS:

Basically, the focus of ergonomics in the interaction between the person’s and machine and the design
of a interface between two.

MACHINE + WORKERS = INTERACTION

Engineers look for better machines and the management looked for skilled workers and train workers
to fit the workers in the better machine.

BETTER MACHINES + BETTER SKILLED WORKERS = EASY ACCOMPLISHED TASK.

AIM:
To develop of comfortable working conditions, safe and best productive and effective working
systems by incorporating human factors.

FOCUS:

1. HUMAN-MACHINE SYSTEMS.
- INTERACTION of this two we can say this have a SYSTEM.

WHAT IS SYSTEM?
SYSTEM - is a set of elements, relation between the elements and the boundary around them.

Most systems consists of PEOPLE (H) and MACHINE (M) and perform a function to produce some
form of output.

(Ergonomics human part of a system where integrated to a design stage.)

NEEDS OF HUMAN:
* EQUIPMENT - where provide USABLE and SAFE.

The task is compatible the people’s expectations, limitations and trainings.

DESIGNING OF A WORKPLACE

*Sometimes we rather to design workplace even so without human capability.

DESIGNING A SYSTEM IS USUALLABLE AND SAFETY

- An environment that is comfortable and appropriate for the task.

- A system of work recognize peoples social and economic needs.
