This lab report describes an experiment to test the tensile strength of a stitched fabric sample. Two 150mm x 35mm fabric strips were stitched together and tested using a tensile testing machine. The machine applied force to the sample until it broke, recording the breaking force and elongation. The stitched sample broke at the seam when a force was applied, showing the seam is the weakest point. The results help determine the fabric's quality and suitable applications based on its tensile strength.

To study the tensile strength of fabric

ABSTRACT
In this lab, two fabric sample (150mm X 35mm) joining together by stitching. Then tensile strength of
this sample checked. For this, a test specimen was clamped in a tensile testing machine and a force was
applied until the specimen breaks. The breaking force and elongation were recorded.

1.0 INTRODUCTION
A seam is a method of joining two or more pieces of materials together by a row of stitching. The purpose
of most of these seams is purely functional and can be called as constructional seams. Seams should be as
flat as possible and unseen except those that are used for decorative purposes for garment design and line.
Seams can be classified into flat seams and ridge seams. Plain seam and flat fell seam are examples of flat
seams. Ridge seams include the French seam.

Double seam
The tensile strength of the fabric is the maximum amount of tensile stress and tension that fabric can
withstand before breaking. Textile tensile testing machine is designed to test the material’s elongation and
tensile strength properties. Tensile strength tester is the testing equipment containing the jaws to hold
fabric strip and give tension to strip in order to check its tensile strength. Tensile strength tester is shown
in figure.

3
This experiment was based on ASTM standard of D5035. This method covers the breaking strength and
elongation determined by the cut or revel strip procedure. This method is applicable to woven, nonwoven
and felted fabrics. It is not recommended for glass or knit fabrics. The strip method is a
strength/elongation test in which the entire specimen width is tested.

2.0 EXPERIMENTAL

2.1 Material
A woven fabric strip (150mm X 35mm) was used to find out its tensile strength with the help of tensile
strength tester.

2.2 Methodology
 Took two fabric sample of size 150mm X 35mm and stitch these two fabric.
 Then the required material and equipment was accessed.
 The power was supplied to the tensile strength tester.
 The 5mm was marked from both sides of strip and the yarns were removed.
 Then fabric strip is placed between jaws and operation was started.
 Jaws continued to move in opposite direction until fabric rupture.
 The values of elongation, tensile strength, elongation break and force peak were noted from
testing software.
 At the end fabric test strength tester was switched of and spoiled fabric was removed.
Note: The experiment was performed under condition having humidity of 52% and temperature of 29 0C.

3.0 RESULT AND DISCUSSION

The tensile strength is the measure of maximum force fabric can bear or support, elongate before it
breaks. In right figure force and elongation break value appeared. The elongation strength of this fabric
sample is 12.662 and in the left side a graph is shown that describe fabric tensile strength that gradually
increased as force on fabric increased. The distance between the two jaws is 75mm and the fabric break
from the stitch line, then we note fabric strength value.

4
4.0 CONCLUSION
We conclude that the fabric break first from seam line because stitch yarn broke when some force applied
on it. The resultant values help to determine the quality, limitations and best applications. For example,
tensile strength may vary with the material used and weave structures henceforth designers and producers
can decide and choose the materials for further usage.
