Solve the following problems:

1. One liter of crude oil weighs 9.6 N. Calculate its specific weight, density and specific gravity.

2. Calculate the specific weight, specific volume, and mass density of methane at 100 ℉ and 120 psi
absolute.

3. (a) Find the change in volume of 1.00 ft 3 of water at 80℉ when subjected to a pressure increase of
300 psi.
(b) From the following test data, determine the bulk modulus of elasticity of water : at 500 psi, the
volume was 1 ft3, and at 3, 500 psi, the volume was 0.990 ft3.

4. Assume that specific weight at the surface is 10 kN/m 3 and the average bulk modulus of elasticity is
2.340 GPa. At a great depth in the ocean, the pressure is 80 MPa. Find: (a) the change in specific
volume between the surface and that great depth, (b) the specific volume at that depth , and (c) the
specific weight at that depth.

5. A cylinder contains 12.5 ft3 of air at 120°F and 40 psi absolute. The air is compressed to 2.50 ft 3, (a)
Assuming isothermal conditions, what is the pressure at the new volume, and what is the bulk
modulus of elasticity? (b) Assuming adiabatic conditions, what is the final pressure and temperature,
and what is the bulk modulus of elasticity?

6. The inside of a fixed 0.128-m radius cylinder was rotated by a 0.122-m radius cylinder
concentrically. If both cylinders are 0.305 m long, determine the viscosity of the liquid that fills the
space between the cylinders if a torque of 0.881 N-m is required to maintain an angular velocity of 60
revolutions per minute.

7. (a) Explain why the viscosity of a liquid decreases while that of a gas increases with an increase in
temperature.
(b) The following data refer to a liquid under shearing action at a constant temperature. Determine its
dynamic viscosity.

du/dy (rad/s) 0 0.2 0.4 0.6 0.8

τ (N/m2) 0 1 1.9 3.1 4

(c) If the viscosity of water at 70℃ is 0.00402 poise and its specific gravity is 0.978. Determine its
absolute viscosity in Pa-s and its kinematic viscosity in m2/s and in stokes.

8. A needle 35 mm long rests on a water surface at 20°C. What force over and above the needle's
weight is required to lift the needle from contact with the water surface?

9. (a) A block of dimensions 300mm X 300mm X 300mm and mass 30 kg slides down a plane inclined
at 30° to the horizontal, on which there is a thin film of oil of viscosity 2.3 X 10 -3 N-s/m2. Determine the
speed of the block if the film thickness is estimated to be 0.03mm.
(b) An 18-kg slab slides down a 15° inclined plane on a 3-mm thick film of oil with viscosity
μ=0.0814Pa-sec. If the contact area is 0.3 m 2, find the terminal velocity of the slab. Neglect air
resistance.

10.If the velocity distribution of a viscous liquid ( μ = 0.9 Ns/m2) over a fixed boundary is given by u =
0.68 y – y2 in which u is the velocity in m/s at a distance y meters above the boundary surface,
determine the shear stress at the surface and at y = 0.34 m.
