Tutorial 2

This document contains 5 problems related to fluid mechanics. Problem 1 asks to calculate the force of water on the bottom of a submerged cube and the tension in the tether. Problem 2 asks to calculate the pressure in pipe B given differential readings in an inclined-tube manometer. Problem 3 asks to develop an expression for the water height inside an inverted cylindrical container lowered beneath a pool's surface. Problem 4 asks to show stability and metacentric height for a floating hemisphere. Problem 5 asks to determine a ratio based on changes in air pressure and a brine-mercury interface.

Fluid Mechanics I (ME 214)

Department of Mechanical Engineering

1. A 125 ml (millilitre) cube of solid oak (specific gravity 0.77) is held submerged by a tether as shown
in Fig. 1. Calculate the actual force of the water on the bottom surface of the cube and the tension in the
tether.

2. For the inclined-tube manometer as shown in Fig. 2 the pressure in pipe A is 0.6 psi. The fluid in both
pipes A and B is water (specific weight of water 62.4 lb/ft3 ), and the gage fluid in the manometer has a
specific gravity of 2.6. What is the pressure in pipe B corresponding to the differential reading shown?

3. An inverted cylindrical container is lowered slowly beneath the surface of a pool of water. Air trapped in
the container is compressed isothermally as the hydrostatic pressure increases. Develop an expression for
the water height, y, inside the container in terms of the container height, H, and depth of submersion, h.

4. A solid hemisphere of density ρ and radius r floats with its plane base immersed in a liquid of density ρl
(ρl > ρ). Show that the equilibrium is stable and the metacentric height is (3r/8)(ρl /ρ − 1).
5. Consider the system shown in Fig. 5. If a change of 0.7 kPa in the pressure of air causes the brine-
mercury interface in the right column to drop by 5 mm in the brine level in the right column while the
pressure in the brine pipe remains constant, determine the ratio of A2 /A1 .
