EE114-1 Homework 2

The service entrance of a building electrical system controls the power entering the building and includes components like a meter, fuse and circuit breaker. Switchboards control and protect power distribution systems using devices like fuses and circuit breakers, while panelboards provide branch circuit protection at lower current ratings. Step-up transformers increase voltage for transmission, while step-down transformers decrease voltage for distribution and domestic use. Circuit breakers automatically disconnect circuits during overloads or short circuits, and fuses are replaceable elements that melt to isolate equipment during overcurrent. Busways are prefabricated electrical distribution systems used to distribute power between floors in buildings.

EE114-1 Homework 2

1. What is the service entrance of a building electrical system and what are its components?

-The service entrance is the entrance where the wires are connected to the load side of the
meter and it controls the power entering the building to prevent over current and over voltages.
Its components are electrical meter, fuse and circuit breaker.

2. What are the functions and differences of switchboards and panelboards?

SWITCH BOARD PANEL BOARD

-single panel or a group of panels that -group of circuit breaker or fuses for
are assembled with buses, overcurrent lighting protection, receptacles, branch
devices and metering equipments circuit for power distribution.
-controls power and protects the -provides protection for the power run
distribution system using fuses, circuit to the load and also protect its control
breakers and protective relays circuit
-current rating is about 100 to 1.2 kA -1.2kA to 5kA

3. What is the difference between a step-down and step-up transformer?

STEP-UP TRANSFORMER STEP-DOWN TRANSFORMER

-mainly used for power transmission system -usually used in distribution system because
because there is less power loss due to higher domestic use or houses requires lower voltage
voltage
-primary winding count is less than the -primary winding count is more than the
secondary secondary
-converts low voltage/current to higher -converts high voltage/current to lower
voltage/current voltage /current

4. What is a circuit breaker and where is it used in a building electrical system?

-  A circuit breaker is an automatically operated electrical switch designed to protect an

electrical circuit from damage caused by excess current from an overload or short circuit.
A circuit breakers work is to distinguish an over power protection condition and, to quickly
suspend electrical supply.

5. What is a fuse and where is it used in a building electrical system?

- Fuse is a small thin conductor designed to melt and separate into two pieces for the purpose of
breaking the circuit in the event of excessive current. It is a resistive element and it melted
during overrated current supply due to heat dissipation from resistor. Almost all electronic items
have fuses and it blow off during higher power supply and isolate the equipment from supply.
Once fuse blown off, it can be replaceable.
6. What are types of conductor (wire) materials and where are they used in building electrical
systems?

-hard drawn copper conductor: suitable for distribution work where spans and tapping are more
-copper-welded conductor: may be used for longer span such as a river crossing.
-all-aluminum conductor: used in distribution lines in the urban area and short transmission line
with the lower voltages
-aluminum conductor steel reinforced: used in small sag

7. What is the difference between a receptacle and plug-in building electrical systems?

- Plugs have prolonged connecting pins which fit into a mating socket called a receptacle. A
receptacle connector is sometimes called a jack. A receptacle will have mounting features such
as a flange with holes.

8. Distinguish between the terms appliance and device. Give examples of each.
-A device is any piece of equipment made for a specific purpose especially a mechanical or
electrical one. On the other hand, and appliance is a non-manual and electrically powered
device used for domestic purposes. An example of a device is a clock and a recorder while a
mixer and a television is an example of appliances.
9. What is a busway and where is it used in building electrical systems?

-A busway is defined as a prefabricated electrical distribution system consisting of bus bars in a

protective enclosure, including straight lengths, fittings, devices, and accessories.  In this
method, it is easy to install and replace than cables. Busways are used to distribute power in one
floor to another floors and distribute power from electric service to main entrances.

10. How are electric motors rated?

-Electrical motors are rated on the basis of power rating, maximum current rating, maximum
efficiency, maximum speed and operating voltage input range.
