Photoshop File

Formats
Using different file types in Photoshop
Photoshop has lots of
different file types for
different purposes

What different kinds of file formats

can you think of?
You can have different
versions of the same file in
different file formats
RAW File
• The camera RAW file is an
uncompressed file format
• Can have various file extensions such
as .nef, .cr2, .RAF
• It offers the most flexibility in the
editing process as it holds lots of
information
• RAW files are a large file type in terms
of Mb
• RAW files give the very best quality
images the camera can record
PSD File
• PSD stands for Photoshop Document.
• It is the standard file format for use
in Photoshop.
• PSD supports the use of
Transparency in images and allows
the use of Layers in Photoshop.
• The PSD format is the ideal format to
edit images in before printing out or
uploading to the internet.
• PSD files can not be printed in their
native format.
• PSD can only be opened in
photoshop
TIFF File
• TIFF stands for Tagged Image File
Format
• TIFF used to be the best possible
option for saving images as it is a
lossless format.
• TIFF can save layers
• TIFF files can be extremely large and
can handle more than 2GB which
may slow your system
• TIFF can be viewed out of photoshop
JPEG File
• JPEG uses the extensions .jpg or
.jpeg, they do the same thing.
• Jpegs compress file information and
will lose information (flattens the
image)
• This makes them small and
manageable.
• They are ideally suited to use on the
internet or for sending digitally.
• Repeatedly saving a jpeg will
damage the file quality.
PNG File
• Portable Network Graphics
• Users can open PNG images with a
large number of free and
commercial programs
• It contains a bitmap of indexed
colors and is compressed
with lossless compression
• Will allow a cut out image to be
saved with no background
(transparent)
