F F F F: Inverse Function

The document discusses inverse functions, noting that an inverse function g of f can be written as f-1. It provides that for functions f and g to be inverse functions, f(g(x)) = g(f(x)) = x. It then gives examples of verifying whether pairs of functions are inverse functions by checking if f(g(x)) = x, and solving for the inverse of various functions.

INVERSE FUNCTION

If g is an inverse function of f, then g can be written as f −1, read as “f inverse.” Note that f −1
1 −1
notation is NOT the same as . f is a name for the inverse function of f.

INVERSE FUNCTIONS F AND G

The functions f and g are inverse function if and only if f(g(x)) = g(f(x)) = x.

GEAR UP!!!

Using The definition of inverse functions, verify if the following pairs of functions are inverses of each
other.

x+3
Example 1: f(x) = 2x – 3 and g(x) = (VERIFYING IF INVERSE)
2

Solution:
Using the definition, we have:

f(g(x)) = x

2 ( x+2 3 )−3 = x
x+3–3=x

x=x (If both sides of the equation are equal it means f and g are inverses.)

Post up!!

Solve for the inverse of the following functions.

Example 1: f(x) =4x – 3

Solution:

A. Change f(x) to y. y = 4x – 3
B. Interchange x and y. x = 4y – 3
C. Then solve for y. x = 4y – 3
