They are
classified into three types which are the Igneous, Sedimentary, and Metamorphic Rocks.
IGNEOUS ROCKS
Magma is produced when minerals are melted because of the high temperature inside the earth's core.
The melted material puts too much pressure on the Earth's surface and it sometimes bursts, making the
magma flow out. When magma goes out, it is called lava. Igneous rocks are formed through the cooling
and solidification of magma or lava. Examples of this rock are basalt and granite.
SEDIMENTARY ROCKS
Wind and water can break rocks on the Earth's surface or carry them to another place, these broken
down materials are called sediments. When these are compressed and compacted, they eventually form
sedimentary rocks. Simply, they are rocks composed of many, smaller rocks. The most common examples
of these are limestones and sandstones.
METAMORPHIC ROCKS
Metamorphic rocks are baked rocks. They do not melt but they change because of intense heat or
pressure while forming. In the very hot and pressured conditions deep inside the Earth's crust, both
sedimentary and igneous rocks can be changed into metamorphic rock. For example, clay can change to
slate, and limestone can change into marble.
The Rock Cycle is a process in which rocks are continuosly changed or transformed between these three
types over geologic time.
Magma goes out to the earth's surface. It cools and becomes IGNEOUS ROCK. This rock breaks into
smaller pieces of sediments. When these are compacted and cemented, they turn in to SEDIMENTARY
ROCK. This rock slowly goes deep into the earth's crust and through high heat and pressure, it becomes
metmorphic rock. And the process goes all over again and again.
