Exam 1 Solution PDF

This document is the first exam for a course on mechanics. It consists of 4 problems to be solved without notes or books, using only provided equation sheets. Problem 1 involves analyzing acceleration components along a curved path. Problem 2 deals with calculating takeoff velocity and length for an accelerating airplane. Problem 3 requires finding the minimum speed for a soccer ball kicked at an angle to pass over a goalkeeper. Problem 4 concerns the acceleration, speed, and path of a box sliding down a curved hill.

BNG-202 Exam 1 Spring 2013 Name ________________________

There are four problems on this exam. The exam is closed notes and closed books, only the provided equation
sheets may be used. Please be neat and SHOW ALL WORK!
Problem 1 (15 points)

Consider the track pictured at the bottom right. The object starts at the point corresponding to s = 0, goes
on the straight line path to s 1 , around the semi-circle (with radius r) to s 2 , and travels the remaining
straight light distance to s 3 . For the entire path, the object is going at a constant speed v. Please indicate on
the graphs below the tangential (a t ) and centripetal (a n ) components of the acceleration, and for any
segments where it is non-zero, label the values on the y-axis.

Hint: This problem should take you no more than a few minutes and should require no calculations/work!

Problem 2 (30 points)

The airplane (pictured at right) travels along a straight runway

with an acceleration described by the graph. If it starts from rest
and requires a velocity of 90 m s-1 to take off,

a) Determine the time t f at takeoff (motion from rest starts at t =

0).
b) Determine the minimum length of runway required for take-off.
c) Construct the s(t) and v(t) graphs – please indicate the equations
of the curve segments on your graphs (the same way as the first
acceleration segment is indicated at right) and label all
coordinates.

Problem 3 (30 points)

Noticing that the keeper has frozen in fear, Landon

Donovan kicks the soccer ball from 160 feet away
in stoppage time in the World Cup at a 45° angle.

a) Determine its minimum initial speed v A so that

it passes over the keeper (hint: first find the time
needed for the ball to travel the horizontal
distance to the keeper).
b) At what distance past the keeper does the ball
land in the net (i.e., what is the distance between
B and C)?

Problem 4 (25 points)

A box of negligible size (pictured at right) is sliding down

along a curved path defined by the parabola y = 0.4x2.
When it is at A (s x = 2 m), the speed is v = 8 m s-1, and the
increase in speed is v = 4 m s-2.

a) Determine the magnitude of the acceleration of the box

at this instant.
b) On the diagram itself, draw arrows representing the a,
a t , and a n vectors (hint: remember that a n always points
toward the center of the curvature, so in this case, a
will not point straight down as it would for freefall!).
c) If the acceleration found in part a is constant throughout
the motion down the hill, does a n increase or decrease
while approaching the bottom of the hill? Based on that,
would a t increase or decrease? (hint: think of what the
a n , a t components would look like far away from the
bottom of the hill, i.e., when the path of motion is
almost straight down vertically). Explain why!
