Quiz-8 (Take-Home Honour Code Applies) : Due 10.35 Am Mon 29-Aug-2016 Topic: X-Ray Crystallography (Self-Study Material Attached)

This document provides instructions for an assignment on X-ray crystallography. Students are asked to complete a take-home quiz by analyzing how X-ray diffraction can be used to determine the arrangement of atoms within a crystal based on intensities of diffracted X-ray beams. They must calculate the relationship between the diffraction angle theta and inter-planar spacing d for constructive interference, relate theta to the lattice constant a for a simple cubic lattice, and draw a graph of intensity versus theta.

Quiz-8 (take-home; Honour code applies):

Due 10.35 am Mon 29-Aug-2016

Topic: X-ray crystallography (self-study material attached)
X-ray crystallography is a method of determining the arrangement of atoms within a crystal, in
which a beam of X-rays strikes a crystal and causes the beam to spread into many specific
directions. By varying the angles and measuring the intensities of these diffracted beams, a
crystallographer can produce a three-dimensional picture of the density of electrons within the
crystal. The simplest thing to determine is the inter-planar spacing d shown in the diagram.
(1) Calculate the relationship between theta and d for x-rays of wavelength lambda for
constructive interference giving rise to an intensity maximum of the diffracted beam. If the set
of planes shown is the [1 1 1] set of planes of a simple cubic lattice, (2) relate theta to the lattice
constant a, and (3) draw a sketch of a graph of intensity vs theta. Note how theta is measured!
