While the concrete is setting in a mold, a steel rod placed at the center is pulled apart and clamped at 1% strain to prestress the concrete beam. The cross-sectional area of the steel rod is 10% of the total beam area of 100 sq cm. Given the Young's moduli of steel and concrete, the document asks to calculate the magnitude and whether the prestress in the concrete part of the beam is tensile or compressive.

• In order to improve its strength, concrete (=cement+aggregate; aggregate=stone of
controlled sizes) is often pre-stressed during the setting process. Calculate the pre- stressing level in the prefabricated beam made using the mould below, in which a steel rod is placed at the center of the empty mould and pulled apart and clamped into a tension state with a strain of 1%. While the rod is kept in tension, concrete is poured into the mould and allowed to set. Once the concrete is set, the steel rod is unclamped and the mould removed. The set concrete along with then encased rod becomes the prefabricated beam. Typically, the cross-sectional area of the steel rod is 1% to 10% (assume 10% here) of the beam c/s area (=100 sq cm here). Assume this to be a one-dimensional problem. Also assume there is no slip between the steel rod and the set concrete. Calculate the magnitude and nature (tensile or compressive) of the pre-stress in the concrete part of the beam. Young’s modulus for steel is 200GPa and concrete is 40GPa.
