INTRODUCTION
The word computer is derived from the Latin word “Compute” which to calculate. It is a calculating device which
performs calculations at a fast speed. It can also be defined as

“It is an electronic device that accepts input

logically and gives output.”

USES OF COMPUTER
Followings are the main types of computer.
Office work
We can do office work very easily with the help of computer.
Communication
We can send and receive messages all over the world using internet.
Storage
We can store a large amount of data on computer. For example text, pictures, games and audio video files etc.
Educational purposes
We can use it for educational and vocational purposes.
Medical purposes
We can use it for diagnosis of different diseases. We can use it to store the medical history of patients.
Defence purposes
We can use it for defence purposes of a country.
Entertainment purposes
We can use it for different entertainment purposes. We can play games, watch movies and listen to music on
computer.
Science and technologies
We can use it for the advancement of science and technologies.
E-commerce
We can buy and sell products all over the world using internet.
ATM
Many banks provide the facility of automated teller machine. We can withdraw cash from ATM at any time.
E-banking
We can transfer funds from one account to another on the internet.
Architecture
We can use it for making designs of buildings.

CHARACTERISTICS OF COMPUTER
Followings are the main characteristics of computer.
Speed
Computer is very fast device. It can perform a task in fractions of a second, like milliseconds, microseconds,
nanoseconds, picoseconds and even more.
Accuracy
The accuracy of a computer is very high. The error rate is very low. The degree of accuracy of a computer depends
upon its design.
Storage
A computer can store a large amount of data and can retrieve it when it is required.
Efficiency
Computer is very efficient device. It can perform one task after another at a high speed. It can also perform
multiple tasks at the same time.
Automation
Computer can repeat any operation with a single instruction. One it is programmed, it can work automatically
without the intervention of human beings.
HISTORY OF COMPUTER
INTRODUCTION
Computer was invented because “necessity is the mother of invention”. Man always searched for a fast calculating
device.
It took a long time to invent a digital computer. A brief history behind the invention of computer as follows.
