C. BASIC INSTRUCTIONS FOR STUDENTS ENROLLED IN THIS COURSE.

6
Remember: Modular Distance learning means that basically you will do the lessons
independently, on your own. In this course, you will study on your own, but under close
supervision by your teacher.

1. To complete this course, you are advised to do the lessons by reading the study
units in the course manual, as many times as necessary to fully understand
them, and read other materials recommended for further reading and those at the
reference section, (and watch the recommended videos, when applicable).
2. Each unit contains self- assessment exercises which you must answer in a
notebook specifically for this course. At specific points in the course, you will be
required to submit your assignment notebook for assessment purposes.
3. You should do all the self-assessment exercises, either alone or in a group chat
with your course mates. You may get help in doing the lessons, exercises and
written tests as well as the final project, consult any reference available on hand
or even ask anyone knowledgeable about the subject. This is not considered
cheating because doing so is like training yourself to engage in guided research,
and you will learn more.
4. There will be three examinations, the prelims, the midterm and the semifinal,
which will be sent to you online (or printed, as the case may be) before the finals.
You will submit your answers either online or personally to your teacher.
5. At the end of the course, there is a final examination, written and oral. The written
exam will be done at home. The oral exam may be via teleconference , in a
group with other students or alone, via video chat or face- to- face with your
teacher.
6. You have to allocate your time to each unit in order to complete the course
successfully and on time.
7. Whenever you need to, do not hesitate to consult your teacher, who will be
available online at the scheduled time for this course, or through cellphone.
8. Do all the tutor-marked assignments at the end of each module. Answer and
submit them to your teacher on demand.

D. THE COURSE. SPANISH 1

1. Study Units

There are sixteen (16) lessons grouped into four modules. Each module is divided into
units that expand on topics related to the main theme of the module. Next, these topics
are listed followed by discussions on them. You should be able to do the self-
assessment exercises that are added at intervals as the discussions go on. Each self-
assessment exercise provides practice for you in developing the sequential components
of the course. Your answers are supposed to be relevant and short.

In order for you not to get lost in doing the different interactive activities in the lessons,
you will be provided with the English translation of all the instructions.

2. Teacher and Tutorials/Consultation

Tutorials/consultations are provided in support of this course. You may get in touch with
your teacher online (for online students) or by cellphone or appointment (for offline
students). You will be assigned in a group chat or tutorial group.

7
Your teacher will mark and comment on your assignments, keep a close watch on your
progress and on any difficulties you might encounter, as well as provide assistance to
you during the course. You must submit your tutor- marked assignments well before the
due date to your teacher, who will mark and return them to you as soon as possible.

Do not hesitate to contact your teacher if you do not understand any part of the study
units or the assigned readings; if you have difficulty with the self -assessment exercises;
or if you have a question or a problem with an assignment, his/her comments on an
assignment or with the grading of an assignment.

You should try your best to make use of the tutorials. This is the only chance to have
face to face contact with your teacher and ask questions which are answered instantly.
You can raise any problem encountered in the course of your study. To gain the
maximum benefit from course tutorials prepare a question list before attending them.

E.ASSESSMENT

There is a self-assessment exercise at the end of every unit and a tutor-marked

assignment at the end of every module. You are required to attempt all the exercises
and assignments, write the answers in your notebook and submit the notebook to your
teacher on demand The work that you submit to your teacher for assessment will count
for 10% of your total course mark.

F.FINAL EXAMINATION AND GRADING

The final examination will have a written and oral part and will carry 40% of the total
course grade. The written exam (10 %) may be done at home but the oral exam (30%)
will be done face to face with the teacher or via teleconference or video chat. The
examination will consist of questions which will reflect everything you have learnt about
Spanish. You should use the time between finishing the last module and taking the
examination to revise the entire course. You may find it useful to review your self-
assessment exercises and tutor marked assignments before the examination.

G.FINAL PROJECT

At the end of the course, you will be required to submit a project (20 %): Write and
present a skit in Spanish depicting one daily activity reflecting skills and competencies
acquired in the course..

H.COURSE MARKING SCHEME

The following table lays out how the actual course marking is broken down.

Assessment Marks

Assignments (written in the notebook) 10%

8
Prelims 10%

Midterm 10%

Semifinal 10%

Final examination

Written 10%

Oral 30%

Course Project 20 %

Total 100% of course marks

With this marking scheme, we can be sure that the student’s final grade will
be fair and objective because it is based largely on the oral examination
where they really demonstrate what they have learnt from the course.

Perhaps, he got help in doing the written examinations and the course
project, which we actually encourage because in doing so they learn a lot,
but all in all, even if they do all the written works perfectly, they can only
get a maximum of 70% for the finals.

It is the oral exam that determines if they will pass or not because it carries
the remaining 30% they need to complete their final grade. They should be
very well prepared and do their best to be able to pass it.

I.TIPS TO MANAGE A DISTANCE LEARNING COURSE

1. Get prepared and make a plan. Distance learning is self-paced.

2. Organize your study space. There's no right or wrong place to study
- if it works for you, that's great.
3. Get familiar with your course pages.
4. Discover your learning style.
5. Set study goals.
6. Review your work regularly.
7. Ask for help if you get stuck.
8. Stay motivated.
9. Think positively.
10. Look after yourself.

9
J.SPECIFIC TIPS FOR STUDENTS OF THIS COURSE

● Find out your daily/weekly schedule and stick to it. Try making a checklist
so you can see your progress as you complete tasks.

● Be sure to schedule movement and "brain breaks"!

Moving is vital to health, well-being, and readiness for learning. Going

outside, exercising, and thinking meaningfully about your feelings and
thoughts are important ways to stay calm and focused during this time.

● Find a quiet place to complete your work and keep all your study materials
together.

It is highly recommended that you download the prescribed online materials

and videos to be used in this course to facilitate access to them.

● Put in your best effort each day. Maintaining your work habits will help you
once we return to the regular school setting.

● Reduce distractions: turn off social media, TV, and/or put your phone
away when you’re working - you can build in time to check your phone at
breaks.

● Have something to eat before getting started and be sure to take a break
for lunch if you’re still working. Try to add healthy options like fruits and
vegetables and avoid sugary drinks and junk foods.

● Start your work early in the day so that you don’t miss live online classes,
opportunities to collaborate with classmates, or the chance to reach out for
help when you need it.

● Participate in live classes when you can.

● Ask your teacher if live lessons are recorded so that you can access
recorded classes later.

● Self-advocate: contact your teacher, counselor, trusted adult, or friend

when you need help.

● Create virtual study groups to work together with your friends on projects,
complete tasks, or review material.

K.TIPS FOR PARENTS/GUARDIANS

● Reinforce that online courses are as important as traditional, face-to-face

courses.

See that your child follows his/her daily and weekly schedule for
studying and completing assignments.

Encourage time for movement and mindfulness each day. Moving is vital to
health, well-being, and readiness for learning. Going outside, exercising, and

10
thinking meaningfully about our feelings and thoughts are important ways to
stay calm and focused during this time.

● Define expectations. Agree on incentives to encourage your child to focus

on their work.

● Remind your child to identify a dedicated workspace to keep their

materials and do their work.

● Encourage your child to start working early in the day so that they don’t
miss live online classes, opportunities to collaborate with classmates, or the
chance to reach out for help when they need it.

● Ensure your child eats a healthy breakfast before getting started in the
morning.

● Check in with your child as they begin the day’s learning, and at the end of
each day’s work.

● Remind your child to reach out to their teachers or peers when they need
help.

● Encourage your child to maintain contact with friends through online

methods or social media - but continue to monitor your child's social media
use.

Remind your child to be polite, respectful and appropriate, and to follow

school expectations for digital citizenship in their interactions with others.

Report unkindness, bullying, and other problems so that everyone maintains

healthy relationships, and positive interactions.

● Give encouragement and celebrate your child’s achievements and efforts.

Give positive feedback about how they are handling their learning.
