PLM Customization

Customization of a PLM system is necessary to fit organizational processes but should be minimized to reduce costs and risks. Organizations should carefully select a PLM solution that closely matches their industry and processes to limit customization needs. While some customization for reports and interfaces is typical, heavily modifying the core solution is not recommended. Choosing experienced service providers can guide the selection of the right PLM system and reduce customization. Any customization taken on will increase maintenance costs and risks during upgrades.

PLM Customization

Customization is needed to fit the PLM system with organization process. But this does not
imply organizations has to invest heavily on customization.
 Solution Gaps & Integration: A lot needs to be explored before investing into PLM
system like functionality available and processes supported to match to your industry.
Poor PLM selection will lead to heavy customization which needs more time and money.
 Service Providers: Service providers and external consultants should play a fair role in
helping organization choosing right PLM solution which fits to their industry. Mostly
service providers due to lack of product knowledge take easy approach of customization.
Beware of this customization oriented service providers.
 Typical customization: Mostly customization should be in building organization
specific standard reports, simplifying the User Interface and few organization specific
processes.
Modifying PLM solution entirely is a BIG NO, this implies that you have chosen a wrong PLM
solution, so invest in selecting RIGHT PLM solution. After selecting right PLM then comes
choosing right service provider. Please choose service providers with strong PLM expertise and
development expertise, though it costs bit more. In long term this extra cost will be easily
recovered. And lastly try to configure as much as possible, even if it involves a bit of process
changes.
Impacts of Customization
Once solution is customized, it’s your solution. You own it. Once you own something you are
responsible for its maintenance.
 Organization Processes: If an organization is resistant to change their business process
and decided to invest in customization. It’s investing time, money and resources in
building old process in new system. This is a lost opportunity for any organization,
because implementing PLM solution is the BEST opportunity to review and optimize
your business processes to match to the future needs.
 Maintenance & Upgrade overhead: Once customized, the solution needs to be
maintained and improved. And during any product upgrades, manually all these custom
solutions needs to be upgraded. It not only increase cost but also increases deployment
time and risk of failure or downtime of PLM system.
 De-customization efforts: Mostly organizations realize that new release of PLM
solutions has similar functionality which they already customized. Now they go in
reverse direction of de-customization.
The more they customize the PLM solution, the more risks they face. So before starting any
customization project, perform a cost-benefit analysis and also look into Roadmap of PLM
vendor.
PLM customization is inevitable, but focus should be on minimizing the customization. It all
starts with choosing right PLM solution, if organizations invest time and money at initial stages
in identifying the right PLM solution with right future Road Map, half the job done. And before
you decide on customization, please perform a cost benefit analysis. And lastly any
customization, keep it simple & minimal to reduce Total Cost of Ownership
