Machine Desing 1 Exam #2 Problem Solving Instructions

1. The document provides instructions for an exam with 3 engineering problems. The first problem asks the student to specify the dimensions of a square steel column loaded with 80,000 lbs if the factor of safety is 2.74. 2. The second problem asks how many schedule 40 steel pipes are needed to support a 200 kip load distributed evenly among them, given a design factor of 2.5. It also asks for the equivalent stress in each pipe. 3. The third problem provides a diagram of a simply supported beam struck at its center by a 500 lb weight dropped from above. It asks the student to calculate the diameter of the beam if it is solid circular steel and the maximum computed stress is 20

MACHINE DESING 1
EXAM #2
Problem solving instructions
Write your solutions on a separate sheet of paper and scan it using Office lens (or any other image scanning
application). Write legibly and submit your answers in the assignments tab of MS Teams.

1. A column is to be built of ½ inch AISI C1020 as rolled steel plates. The plates are made into a square box
section as shown below. It is 6 feet long centrally loaded with 80,0000 lbs. Specify the dimensions required if
the factor of safety is given as 2.74

2. A schedule 40 pipe is used as a column. The properties of the pies are:

 Do = 11.43 cm
 Di = 10.23 cm
 L= 15 feet
Material is equivalent to AISI C1015 as rolled. The total load to be carried is 200 kips. (a)How many
columns are needed to support the total load if the design factor is given as 2.5 assuming that the load
is evenly distributed among them? Use Le = 0.65L for this case. (b)What is the equivalent stress in
each column?

3. An observer, who is directly above the beam, drops a 500lb weight on a simple supporting beam 5 ft.
long strikes its center. The sound of impact is heard 0.8 second after the weight is dropped. The
maximum computed stress is to be 20 ksi and is to be made of steel. Compute the diameter of the
beam if it has a solid circular cross section. Consider a velocity of sound to be 320 m/s.
