The Rostra installation instructions are very complete and should be followed when doing the
actual unit installation. Use their “Installation & Owner's Manual” and follow their installation
procedures. When you have finished installing the unit, refer back to our wiring instructions
to complete the connections at the Panel. Install the wiring harness following the
Installation/Owner's Manual.
IMPORTANT
GM original cruise control switch (open circuit style switch): Note: This unit will
only work on four wire GM switches. A three wire switch will not work with this unit. ( A Rostra
control switch will have to be used if you have a three wire GM switch). Three wire switches can
be found in "some" 1974 and older vehicles.
The correct connector has been supplied for the cruise control switch harness running from the
steering column. Plug in the connector running from the cruise control harness into the column
connector. (Note: Make sure the program switch #12 is OFF when using a GM switch)
Rostra type cruise control switch: Pay close attention to the setting here.
Rostra switches are both open or closed depending on the type switch you have. Refer to the
trouble shooting section of the installation instructions for further information on this setting.
Installation instructions pertaining to the switch are packaged in with the switch.
Locate the white four gang connector running from the cruise control harness which connects to
the cruise control switch harness. An adapter has been added to this harness that must be
removed and discarded. Now plug into the switch harness. After you have made this connection,
refer to page #21 in the installation/owner's instructions. Following the drawing on that page
verifying that the correct color wires are across from each other in the plug.
(Note: Make sure to set the #12 program switch to the correct position)
L.E.D Tail Light Users
Rostra cruise control systems WILL NOT function with L.E.D type tail lights!
These type lights do not produce enough load on the brake/turn light circuitry
to allow the cruise control unit to engage. It will be necessary to install a
device to create this load. RFW part number LR-26 LED Resistors or a hidden
12 volt light bulb(s) into the left & right rear brake/turn circuitry which will
produce the load the cruise control system requires. Failure to install these
lights or resistors will cause the cruise control not to set.
Rostra feed wires have been converted to match our wiring Panel. We also printed the wires and the printing will
match our Panel terminal cover strips for even easier installation. Shown in the chart below is the conversion to
our colors that match our panel color code.
Locate the six gang connector with the two purple, orange and brown wires. Run the purple wire (TACH) to the
"-" side of a standard coil or the tach terminal located in the distributor cap on a HEI distributor. Run the other
purple wire to the cold side of the brake light switch. Splice this wire to the purple wire supplied in the
Express/Bare Bonz. You will now have two purple wires connected to this point. Run the orange wire to #6 on the
Panel. Run the brown wire #14 on he panel and the black wire to a good ground.
Locate the six gang connector with the two purple, orange and brown wires. Run the purple wire (TACH) to the
"-" side of a standard coil or the tach terminal located in the distributor cap on a HEI distributor. Run the other
purple wire to the cold side of the brake light switch. Splice this wire to the purple wire supplied in the Access Kit.
You will now have two purple wires connected to this point. Run the orange wire to the brake light switch. Splice
this wire to the orange wire supplied in the Access kit. You will now have two wires connected to this wire as well.
Run the brown wire to any “KEYED” 12 accessory source running from your Access fuse panel. Run the Black
wire (R) to a good ground.
NOTE: Your Rostra cruise control unit is now fused through the Panel on the BRAKE/HAZARD and
GAUGE fuses. Installing this kit and are not using our Panel, a 10 AMP fuse will have to be added to
the 12v DC accessory power and a 4 amp to 12v DC hot side of the brake switch wires.
Speed Sensor Input
Ron Francis Wiring Speed Sensors: Ron Francis offers a speedometer cable driven speed sensor (Part #
CC-75) which is a 8000 pulse per mile sensor or a magnet type speed sensor (CC-76) that attaches to the drive
shaft. Follow the instructions packaged with the units for this connection. A single gray wire (SPEED SENSOR)
is coiled in the package. Plug this wire into the empty slot in the six gang connector making sure it is across from
the gray wire running from the cruise control harness. Connect the gray wire (SPEED SENSOR) to the VSS HIGH
signal wire running into the computer from the transmission or the electronic speedometer output terminal from the
computer. Remember to set the correct pulse settings as noted on page #8 of the installation manual. The correct
wire connection at the computer can be found by referring to the vehicles shop manual.
GM Speed Sensors: Most 1993 and older GM factory transmission mounted speed sensors are 4000 pulses
per mile. 1994 and newer transmission mounted sensors have much higher pulses per mile signal sent to the
engine computer. Follow the chart on page #8 for the correct switch settings your speed sensor produces.
After Market Speed Sensors: After market gauge manufacturers use an 8000 pulse per mile speed sensor.
A single gray wire (SPEED SENSOR) was coiled in the package along with these installation instructions. Plug
this wire into the empty slot in the six gang connector making sure it is across from the gray wire running from the
cruise control harness. After wiring the gauge connect the gray wire (SPEED SENSOR) to one of the wires
(doesn't matter which one) running from the speed sensor. Remember to set the correct pulse settings as noted
on page #8 of the installation manual.
Ron Francis Wiring is continually changing and improving products. These instructions are written in
conjunction with wiring kits in production now. If you have an older Panel, you may find that references to
certain numbers and colors between the kits may not agree. You will need to call us with the serial number
on your wiring kit and inform us of your needs, we will give you conversion numbers to make things
happen.
