Module 1: Writing Assignment 1- Reflections on Mindfulness

During the video I kept thinking to myself of how difficult it may be to turn off and quiet
my brain, especially when it is always going off rapidly thinking of the many things that
must be accomplished on my list. As I sat here and attempted to quiet the “rapid fire”
thinking that was occurring in my mind I was not able to achieve a full “quiet” moment
when my brain was not thinking of something else, especially when I could here my
children and dog in the other room playing around. I tried focusing on my breathing
during this time and did notice that my breathing slowed down. At first, I kept repeating
to myself “deep breaths, in, out” and then noticed that I stopped repeating those words
and my breathing had significantly slowed down. However, I felt as if I was almost
forcing myself to focus. During that short time when I was able to slow down my
breathing, I did feel a bit more relaxed perhaps if I continue practicing meditating and
being present, I will be able to achieve Mindfulness.
Mindfulness is a current interest in the workplace because it allows the individual to be
present, this in turn helps them be more productive. Mindfulness also has been found to
help decrease conflict in the workplace as individuals learn to train how their brains
respond to anxiety, stress, memory, and attention. This practice has shown many great
results and benefits to individuals in organization and for Google it is even offered for
free.
I can see some benefits in practicing Mindfulness as I notice that I am not always
present, and I let stress take over my thoughts and emotions. Thus, making it difficult
for me to pay attention becoming distracted with the problems that I may be trying to
solve, and becoming even more irritable because of the same stress that is affecting
me. I think practicing Mindfulness will allow me the ability to become more focused and
productive. I feel that some of the benefits of practicing Mindfulness would allow me to
be mentally present in discussions without being mentally drained. Additionally, I think
that practicing Mindfulness will allow an individual to experience all senses at a higher
level than normal and be fully aware of themselves and their surroundings. I don’t think
it will be an easy process to practice and achieve, but I do think it is one worth trying. I
feel it will be extremely beneficial not only in my work environment but also in my
personal life.
