CPR

What is it? 1
CPR-or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation – is an emergency
lifesaving procedure performed when the heart stops
beating.

2 Why is it important?
Immediate CPR can double or triple chances of survival after
cardiac arrest. Keeping the blood flow active – even partially
– extends the opportunity for a successful resuscitation once
trained medical staff arrive on site.

Heart Attack versus Cardiac Arrest 3

Cardiac arrest is an ELECTRICAL problem in which the
heart stops beating & the person is unresponsive.
Heart attach is a CIRCULATORY problem in which blood
flow to the heart is blocked. The heart USUALLY does not
stop beating during a heart attack.
MOST heart attacks do not lead to cardiac arrest,
however some can.
Call 911 if someone is experiencing a heart attack
Call 911 & start CPR immediately if someone is
experiencing cardiac arrest

4 Basic Steps of CPR

1. Recognize the emergency (tap and shout)
2. Activate EMS (call 9-1-1)
3. Check for breathing
4. Compressions: Provide 30 compressions (2 inches deep)
5. Airway: Open the victim’s airway
6. Breathing: Give 2 breaths
7. Continue till help arrives

Interesting Facts 5
Women and men receive similar CPR assistance within the
home, but in public 45 percent of men received
assistance compared to only 39 percent of women.
Men were 1.23 times more likely to receive bystander CPR
in public, and their chance of survival was 23 percent
higher compared to women
