Work, Energy and Power HOME ASSIGNMENT-PHYSICS

ASSIGNMENT # 3
1. A block of mass 100 g is moved with a speed of 5.0 m/s at the highest point in a closed circular tube of radius 10 cm kept in a vertical plane. The
cross-section of the tube is such that the block just fits in it. The block makes several oscillations inside the tube and finally stops at the lowest
point. Find the work done by the tube on the block during the process. [Ans.–1.45 J]
2. A car weighing 1400 kg is moving at a speed of 54 km/h up a hill when the motor stops. If it is just able to reach the destination which is at a
height of 10 m above the point, calculate the work done against friction (negative of the work done by the friction). [Ans. 20, 300 J]
3. A small block of mass 200 g is kept at the top of a frictionless incline which is 10 m long and 3.2 m high. How much work was required (a) to lift
the block from the ground and put it at the top, (b) to slide the block up the incline ? What will be the speed of the block when it reaches the
ground, if (c) it falls off the incline and drops vertically on the ground (d) it slides down the incline ? Take g = 10 m/s².
[Ans. (a) 6.4 J, (b) 6.4 J, (c) 8.0 m/s, (d) 8.0 m/s]
4. Two masses of 1 gm and 4 gm are moving with equal kinetic energies. The ratio of the magnitudes of their linear momenta is
(a) 4: 1 (b) 2 :1 (c) 1: 2 (d) 1: 16 [Ans. (c)]
5. An ideal spring with spring-constant k is hung from the ceiling and a block of mass M is attached to its lower end. The mass is released with
the spring initially unstretched. Then the maximum extension in the spring is
(a) 4Mg/k (b) 2Mg/k (c) Mg/k (d) Mg/2k [Ans. (b)]
6. A block of mass 2 kg is free to move along the x-axis. It is at rest and from t = 0 onwards it is subjected to a time-dependent force F(t) in the x
direction. The force F(t) varies with t as shown in the figure. The kinetic energy of the block after 4.5 seconds is

(a) 4.50 J (b) 7.50 J (c) 5.06 J (d) 14.06 J [Ans. (c)]
7. A particle has shifted along some trajectory in the plane xy from point 1 whose radius vector r1  iˆ  2 jˆ to point 2 with the radius vector

r2  2iˆ  3 jˆ . During that time the particle experienced the action of certain forces, one of which being F  3iˆ  4 jˆ . Find the work performed by
the force F. [Ans. –17 J]

8. A body of mass in is pushed with the initial velocity V₀ up an inclined plane set at an angle α to the horizontal. The friction coefficient is equal
to k. What distance will the body cover before it stops and what work do the friction forces perform over this distance?
v02 mv02k
[Ans. S  (sin   k cos ) ; W  ]
2g 2  k  tan  
9. A projectile is fired from the top of a 40 m high cliff with an initial speed of 50 m/s at an unknown angle. Find its speed when it hits the ground.
[Ans. 58 m/s]
10. A particle moves in one dimension from rest under the influence of a force that varies with the distance travelled by the particle as shown in
the figure. The kinetic energy of the particle after it has travelled 3 m is:

(a) 5J (b) 6.5 J (c) 4 J (d) 2.5 J [Ans.(b)]

11. A particle is moved along a path AB-BC-CD-DE-EF-FA, as shown in figure, in presence of a force F  (ayiˆ  2axjˆ)N , where x and y are in
meter and a =–1N/m. The work done on the particle by this force F will be ____ Joule. [Ans.0.75 J]
