Chapter 3 and 4: Strain and Mechanics of Materials
1. The components of a strain tensor referred to the coordinate frame
in the figure are
0.05 0 0.01
𝜀𝜀𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖  =  −0.02 −0.03
𝑠𝑠𝑠𝑠𝑠𝑠. 0.01
and are constant in the region shown. The direction cosines of CA are
(1/√2, 0, -1/√2) and of DB are (-1/√6, √2/√3, -1/√6). Find:
(a) The extension ratios of lines CA and DB.
(b) The change of the angle ADB.
(c) The three invariants of this strain.
(d) The principal strains and principal directions.
2. Compute the infinitesimal strain tensor and sketch the deformed shape of an initially rectangular
volume element aligned with the axes under the following displacement fields (A, B are constants):
(a) Simple extension: 𝑢𝑢1 = 𝐴𝐴𝑥𝑥1 , 𝑢𝑢2 = 𝑢𝑢3 = 0
(b) Multiaxial deformation: 𝑢𝑢1 = 𝐴𝐴𝑥𝑥1 , 𝑢𝑢2 = −𝐵𝐵𝑥𝑥2 , 𝑢𝑢3 = 0
(c) Simple shear: 𝑢𝑢2 = 𝐴𝐴𝑥𝑥1 , 𝑢𝑢1 = 𝑢𝑢3 = 0
3. Show that for a linear, elastic, isotropic homogeneous solid, strain energy density W can be
expressed in terms of strains as:
𝜆𝜆
𝑊𝑊 = 𝜇𝜇𝜀𝜀𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖 𝜀𝜀𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖 + (𝜀𝜀𝑘𝑘𝑘𝑘 )2

4. A structural component used in an aircraft frame is made from Aluminum 6061-T6.
a) Given E = 68.9 GPa and ν = 0.33, and knowing that the strain in an (x1, x2, x3) frame at a point is
0.002 −0.001 0.001
𝜀𝜀𝑖𝑖𝑖𝑖  =  −0.002 0
𝑠𝑠𝑠𝑠𝑠𝑠. 0.003
find the normal and shear components of the traction acting at that point on a surface with normal

b) If the stress-strain curve for this material is given by following chart, identify and explain important
points on this curve, calculate Young’s modulus, yield stress (at 0.2% strain), ultimate strength and
fracture stress.
