AE 321 - Homework #3 Due: Monday February 25, 2019 Chapter 2: Traction and Stress

1. This document provides instructions for homework problems involving stress and traction calculations. The first problem asks to calculate the stress tensor after rotating coordinates, and traction on a plane at an angle. 2. The second problem asks to calculate traction on a plane where the normal makes equal angles with coordinates, and under what conditions traction stays in the plane. 3. The third problem provides a stress field and asks to calculate equilibrium body forces, planar stress conditions, and states of stress at different points.

40 4 2
[𝜎 ] = [ −30 4] 𝑘𝑃𝑎
𝑠𝑦𝑚𝑚. 6

(a) Compute the stress tensor with respect to the coordinate frame rotated 60º around 𝑥1 −axis.
(b) Compute the traction on the plane passing through P whose outward normal vector n makes
45º angle with 𝑥1 −axis and 60º with 𝑥2 −axis.
(c) Compute the normal and tangential tractions on this plane.
(d) Compute stress invariants (𝑄𝑖 ′𝑠) for the original and rotated coordinate frame (a).

2. The state of stress at a point is given by 𝜎𝑖𝑗 .

(a) Compute the components of traction on the plane whose outward normal makes equal angles
with coordinate axes.
1 1 1
(b) Under what conditions the traction stays inside a plane with the normal 𝑛⃗ = ( , − , )
√3 √3 √3
(Hint: its normal component should be zero)

3. For the following stress field applied to a deformable object:

2𝑥 + 𝑦 11𝑦𝑧 − 12 0
[𝜎 ] = [ 2𝑥𝑦𝑧 − 3 0 ] 𝑀𝑃𝑎
𝑠𝑦𝑚𝑚. 𝑥𝑦𝑧 + 2𝑦

(a) Compute the body force such that the object always remains at equilibrium.
(b) Under what condition(s) the object experiences planar state of stress?
(c) At which point the object experiences uniaxial state of stress with 𝜎11 = 2𝑀𝑃𝑎?
(d) At which point the object experiences pure shear state with 𝜏 = 32𝑀𝑃𝑎?
(e) Compute hydrostatic (isotropic) and deviatoric stresses at the point 𝑃 = (2, −1, 5).

4. The stress tensor at point P on (𝑥, 𝑦, 𝑧) coordinate frame is:

120 40 30
[𝜎 ] = [ 150 20 ] 𝑀𝑃𝑎
𝑠𝑦𝑚𝑚. 100

(a) Compute principal stresses at this point.

(b) Compute principal directions at this point.
(c) Construct Mohr circles and compute maximum shear stress.
