Class12mathactivity 5

This document provides instructions for an activity to understand the concepts of absolute maximum and minimum values of a function. Students are asked to graph the function f(x)=(4x^2-9)(x^2-1) on the interval [-2,2], find its critical points using calculus, and determine that the absolute maximum and minimum values occur at the largest and smallest function values at the critical points and endpoints.

CLASS XII

ACTIVITY – 5

Objective : To understand the concepts of absolute maximum and minimum of a

function in a given closed interval through its graph..

Material Required : Graph sheet, gometrybox, scale , pencil, glue etc.

Method of construction :

1. On the graph sheet draw the graph of the function

f ( x )=( 4 x 2−9 ) (x 2−1) in the interval [-2,2]
2. Taking different values of x in [-2,2], find different vales of f(x) and tabulate
the same.
3. Plot the ordered pair (x,f(x)) on the Cartesian plane and join them with free
hands to obtain the curve as shown below.

Demonstration :

Table showing ordered pair satisfying the function to be drawn

As well as graph of the function which is plotted

Verification of the using calculus :

1. Find f ' ( x )
2. Obtain critical points
3. Evaluate f(x) at all the critical points and also at the end points -2 and 2
4. The absolute maximum will be the largest number found in step 3 while
absolute minimum will be the smallest number found in step3

Observation :

1. The absolute maximum value of f(x) is ……………. at x = …………..

2. The absolute minimum value of f(x) is ……………. at x = …………..
