To my students:
30
You are now on the 2nd week of this course. Before you start working on the lessons for this week
make sure that you have submitted to your course facilitator the requirements of Week 1.

Keep in Mind:
Here is the summary of the concepts and formulas in column form. Don’t forget the following:

Universal Conditional Statement - Universal statements contain some variation of the words "for
all" and conditional statements contain versions of the words "if-then." A universal conditional
statement is a statement that is both universal and conditional.

Universal Existential Statement - A universal existential statement is a statement that is universal

because its first part says that a certain property is true for all objects of a given type, and it is
existential because its second part asserts the existence of something.

Existential Universal Statement - An existential universal statement is a statement that is

existential because its first part asserts that a certain object exists and is universal because its
second part says that the object satisfies a certain property for all things of a certain kind.

Set-Roster Notation - A set may be specified using the set roster notation by writing all of its
elements between braces.

Set-Builder Notation - Let S denote a set and let P(x) be a property that elements of S' may or
may not satisfy. We may define a new set to be the set of all elements x in S such that P(x) is true.
We denote this set as follows: { x ∈ S ∕ P( x ) }

Subset If A and B are sets, then A is called a subset of B, written A ⊆ B, if, and only if, every
element of A is also an element of B.

Are you done answering the check your progress questions?

PROBLEM SETS 1

Name: Score:
Course/Year Level: Date:

Instruction: Answer all the questions found in problem set 1. If an item cannot be answered, spot then
replace the error.

Translate each of the following into an equation, and then solve the equation.
1. The sum of number and 12 is 30. Determine the number.
2. The sum of a number and 2 is 12. Determine the number.
3. The difference of a number and 12 is 30. Determine the number.
4. If 2 is subtracted from a number, the result is 4. Determine the number
5. If three times a number is increased by 4, the result is -8. Determine the number.
6. Specify the set A by listing its elements, where A = { whole numbers less than 100 divisible by
16 }.
7. Specify the set B by giving a written description of its elements, where B = { 0, 1, 4, 9, 16, 25 }.
8. Does the following sentence specify a set? C = { whole numbers close to 50 }.

Use dots to help list each set, and state whether it is finite or infinite.
9. A = { even numbers between 10 000 and 20 000 }
10. B = { whole numbers that are multiples of 3 }

If the set S in each part is finite, write down | S |.

11. S = { primes }
12. S = { even primes }
13. S = { even primes greater than 5 }
14. S = { whole numbers less than 100 }

46
Determine which of the possible answers best matches the next figure in the sequence. (Advanced)
