Hopper Lab: Extension Credit /18

1) The goal of the lab was to determine the time (t) a hopper spends in the air and the initial velocity (vo) of the hopper. Students measured the maximum height reached by two different sized hoppers and used the data to calculate t and vo. 2) Students plotted velocity-time graphs for each hopper using the calculated values of vo and t. They determined the slope of each line, which represents the acceleration due to gravity. 3) Larger hoppers would be expected to have the same slope on the velocity-time graph because size does not affect gravitational acceleration, but may have higher values of vo and longer times in the air due to traveling a greater maximum height.

Hopper Lab
Objective:
The goalofthis lab is to determine:
1. the time (t) a hopperis in the air
“Dh ‘the initial velocity (vo) of the hopper
Materials:
Onelarge hopper
One small hopper
Meterstick, masking tape
Cell phone

Procedure:
1. Invert the hopper and placeit on your lab table top or the floor. .
2, Using the centimeter side of a meterstick, determine the maximum height the hopperreaches.
3. Repeat this process 5 times for each of your two hoppers. |
4, Fill in the chart below with your data.
Or a more accurate procedure: Invert the hopperon the floor in front of meter stick markings on the wall
and record the motion of the hopper using yourcell phone. Use yourcell phone to capture the motion of the
hopperto identify the maximumheight in a still frame.
