Word Making

had dog rag can

Beginner Directions:
1. Cut out the letters on the following page.
2. Review each letter’s sound with your child.
3. Slide the letters to the top of your workspace.
4. Demonstrate how to make the word “had” by saying the word slowly
and “s-t-r-e-t-c-h-i-n-g” the sounds. Pull down each letter in the word
one at a time as you continue to repeat the word slowly. Run your fin-
ger slowly under the entire word as you make each individual sound.
Then run your finger under the word quickly as you say the word
“had” regularly.
5. Move the letters back to the top of the workspace and have your child
try to make the word “had.” Guide and model as needed.
6. As your child’s attention allows, repeat for the words “mac,” “a,”
“bag,” “dog,” “and,” “mag,” “rag,” “can,” “tag,” “got,” “sat,” “on,”
and “end.”

Advanced Directions:
(after mastery of beginner directions)
1. Instruct your child to make the word “had.”
2. Ask him/her to change one letter in “had” to make the word “bad.”
Help by removing the letter “h” back to the top of the workspace if
your child appears stuck. Say the word “bad” slowly, stretching the
sounds to help.
3. Ask him/her to change one letter in “bad” to make the word “bag.”
4. Continue from “bag” to “mag” to “rag” to “tag” to “sag” to “sat.”
5. Model and guide as needed.

model how to pull down each word as you say it and line it up in a row.
Don’t forget to put the period on the end!
5. Move the words back to the top of the workspace and have your child
try to make the same sentence. Guide and model as needed.
