JAKARTA. Many countries at this year’s climate change conference – including China, the
European Union countries, and the U.S. – have set targets for the use of biofuels to reduce their
greenhouse gas emissions.
These examples illustrate that many biofuels may be good for business, but are not a sustainable
solution to greenhouse gas emissions from the transport sector. They result in an increase in
greenhouse gas emissions and an increase in poverty and food insecurity in many parts of the
world.
Biofuels are liquid fuels made from animal or plant matter. Burning them to power vehicles can
result in fewer emissions per unit of energy than using petroleum fuels. Their production may also
promote rural development and national energy security.
The development of palm oil biodiesel in Indonesia provides another example where biofuels may
have significant negative impacts. An expansion of plantations into these areas would mean the
loss of large amounts of biodiversity.
Biofuels may not in fact be a sustainable solution to climate change. Depending on the plants
used to make the fuel, the production process, and the policy frameworks of governments,
biofuels may lead to rising food prices, soil degradation, and loss of biodiversity due to
deforestation.
