Hands-On RTAC Session

SEL Client Exercise

Figure 1 Connection Diagram

SEL Fast Messaging

The SEL Fast Messaging protocol allows the SEL-3530 Real-Time Automation Controller (RTAC) to
communicate directly to SEL relays and communications processors. The RTAC acts like an SEL
communications processor by issuing SEL Fast Messages (Fast Meter, Fast Operate, and Fast SER) to
collect data. The RTAC collects unsolicited write messages (\W) when connected to an SEL
communications processor and supports extended SEL Fast Messaging from certain SEL devices (e.g.,
SEL-2411 Programmable Automation Controller and SEL-400 series relays).

Exercise
Step 1. Start the ACSELERATOR RTAC® SEL-5033 Software. The software will prompt you for a
password to log in to the ACSELERATOR RTAC database. The default password for username
engineer is OTTER. For username admin, the password is TAIL.

Figure 2 RTAC Login

Step 2. Click on New SEL-3530 Project, and wait for ACSELERATOR RTAC to complete the
initialization of the new project. Please ensure that your project matches the firmware version
in your RTAC. Earlier projects can be converted using the conversion tool in the
ACSELERATOR RTAC maintenance options.

SEL Client Exercise Page 2 of 19 20120723

Step 3. Customize the look and feel of your ACSELERATOR RTAC by changing the application
appearance under the View tab and adding the Send and Save options to the quick access
toolbar. You can add or remove items from the quick access toolbar by right-clicking on them
from the drop-down application menu under the SEL button.
Rename your project by right-clicking on the current project name.

Step 4. Explore the System_Time_Control settings. Set Enable_System_Time_DST_Offset to
False. For the exercises today, manually set the RTAC time to local time using the web
server.

Figure 5 System Time Settings

Step 5. Under POU Pin Settings, confirm that Enable_IRIG_B_Time_Out is enabled by having
the default value set to TRUE and Enable_IRIG_B_Time_Out_DST_Offset is disabled by
having the default value set to FALSE. This allows the RTAC to synchronize the SEL-751
Feeder Protection Relay with the RTAC system time through the serial connection.

Figure 6 POU Pin Settings

SEL Client Exercise Page 4 of 19 20120723

Step 6. Add an SEL client connection by clicking on Insert > SEL > 700 Series > 751 > SEL.
ACSELERATOR RTAC will ask you for the Connection Type. Select Client - Serial. Then
select Insert to add the device to your settings.

Figure 7 RTAC Connection Type

Step 7. Configuring ACSELERATOR RTAC is easy. Select the appropriate tabs, and make the
appropriate settings through drop-down menus.
Select the Settings tab, confirm the Serial Communications Port is Com_01, and verify that
the correct Level 1 Password is used.

Figure 8 Settings Tab

Right-click on the top header of the grid, and select Show Advanced Settings. Change the
New Event Lockout Period to 60 seconds. This setting adjusts the amount of time that must
occur between events before the RTAC will update the History - New Event tags. If new
event tags are enabled, they will be populated with the data included in the first event
summary received from the relay. The RTAC will not update them again until the New Event
Lockout Period has expired. Setting the New Event Hold Duration to 0 ensures that the
event data are not reset after a period of time.

Figure 9 Advanced Settings Tab

Step 8. Click on the Message Settings tab. Here you can modify the polling rate for the various SEL
Fast Messages. Use 1000 milliseconds for Meter (includes metering and word bits,
equivalent to 20METER and 20TARGET).

Figure 10 Message Settings Tab

Step 9. Click on the Meter tab to obtain a template of all the available data points that are retrieved
by the 20METER and 20TARGET SEL Fast Messages. By default, all the points are
disabled. Select the points shown in Figure 11 and change their Enable status to True to
define which points will be enabled in the RTAC. Click on the Save button to compile the
changes. All items that have been changed but not saved will be in bold.

Use the search, sort, and filter features to enable all of the following tags. Typing <Ctrl+F>
brings up a search window. Append the function to the pushbutton light-emitting diode
(LED) as indicated by the tag name. Example: Feeder_1_SEL.FM_INST_PB1A_LED_79RS.

Step 12. Click on the POU Pin Settings tab. The RTAC can be configured to automatically collect
events from SEL relays. Set the default of Enable_New_Event_Filtering to TRUE.

Figure 14 POU Pin Settings Tab

Step 13. Now that the New_Event_Filtering feature has been enabled, you can use the tags under the
History - New Event tab. The RTAC will populate these tags with event data information
received from the relay subject to the event lockout period configured in Step 5. Enable the
tags under History - New Event.

Figure 15 History - New Event Tab

Step 14. After clicking on the Save button to compile all changes, you can view a summary of all
configured tags for your SEL-751 client connection under the Tags tab. View the tags to
ensure all required tags are present. Use the RTAC Instruction Manual, which can be found
under the Help button in ACSELERATOR RTAC, to learn about the different tag types listed.
Learn the difference between a complex measured value (CMV), measured value (MV), and
single point status (SPS) before continuing.

Step 15. This completes the configuration of the SEL-751. If you would like to save this configuration
as a template, you can use ACSELERATOR RTAC to store this in a Device Store. Right-click
on the device, and select Save to Device Store.

Figure 17 Device Store

Step 16. You are now ready to download the configuration into the RTAC. This can be done easily by
selecting Send from the ACSELERATOR RTAC ribbon bar. This procedure saves and
compiles the project, checks for errors, and goes online with the RTAC.
Enter the RTAC Internet Protocol (IP) address. If you are using the RTAC USB interface,
this will be 172.29.131.1. Enter the username and password you created in the “Web Server
Introduction Exercise.”
Click Send. ACSELERATOR RTAC will prompt you to make sure that you want to go online.
If you do, click Send.

Step 17. Once you are online with the RTAC, you can visually see your points in real time. Click on
your device, and scroll to your category tabs. Select the Tags tab.
Expand the appropriate tags to see the values and qualities. Additional information can be
seen by expanding various attributes. Ensure that your breaker status and analog values are
the same as shown on your SEL-751.

Figure 20 Online Tags

Step 18. Expand the breaker bit FO_BRK_BRK1 under the Tags category. Expand the operTrip and
operClose attributes.
Force a control to open and close the simulated breaker status on the relay. This is done by
forcing the ctlVal to TRUE for the operTrip or operClose. Entering <F6> will put the force
on, and <Shift+F6> will release it.

Step 19. Employ a Watch window to view the 52A status changing state as you control the breaker.
This can be set up in Home > Online > Tools.

Step 20. Have your instructor trigger an event to see the new event filtering tags updated from the
relay event summary.

Step 22. Examine the POU inputs and outputs that are visible from the Controller tab.
Force the Reset_Statistics pin to TRUE to reset the message counters, and discuss with your
instructor how these pins can be used in programming and troubleshooting.
