Building Cooling Loads

1. Estimate the amount of heat transferred through a 12mm thick window glass
panel of dimensions 1m by 1.5m. The outdoor and indoor temperatures are
33°C and 24°C respectively. State your assumptions. (Thermal conductivity of
glass = 1.1 W/m.K)

2. The surface of a 0.5m by 1m hot plate heater is being maintained at 50°C and
exposed to a surrounding air temperature of 10°C.

a. Calculate the amount of convective and radiation heat transfer from the
hot plate surface. (heat transfer coefficient = 20 W/m 2.K, surface
emissivity = 0.7, Stefan-Boltzmann constant = 5.67 x 10-8 W/m2.K4)

b. Which is the more effective form of heat transfer? What if the

temperature of the surface is 500°C instead? What can you conclude?

3. You intended to move to a new apartment flat and have shortlisted 3 units as
indicated (A, B and C) in the diagram. Which of the three units will be the worst
choice in terms of thermal comfort? State your reasons.

C

4. In the design phase of a new office building, simulation is conducted
to estimate the cooling load of a 3-storey building. A simplified
version of the simulation result is shown in the table below:

Cooling Load (kW)

Level 4am 10am 4pm 10pm
L1 151 220 270 165
L2 89 190 280 114
L3 92 225 315 107

a. Explain the possible reasons why Level 1 cooling load requirement differ
from the rest of the levels especially at off peak timing.

b. The energy consultant notices that at 4 pm, the cooling load requirement
is very high. Describe a few methods to reduce the cooling load in the
afternoon.
