(BASIC MATH) Algebraic Expressions PDF

An algebraic expression contains variables, numbers, and operation symbols. It includes at least one variable and constant. Terms are parts of an expression that are added or subtracted. A polynomial is an expression where variables have whole number exponents and coefficients are real numbers. Like terms have the same variables and exponents. The degree of a polynomial is the highest exponent of its terms. Algebraic expressions can be added by combining like terms and divided by subtracting exponents.

ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSION

EXPRESSIONS
An expression consists of a combination of

numbers, operation symbols, and grouping

symbols such as parentheses ().

ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSIONS

Variable / Literal Coefficient
A variable is a letter or symbol that represents a number
(unknown quantity).

A variable can use any letter of the alphabet (needs to be

lower case).

Numerical Coefficient
The number which reproduces the variables is known as
"Numerical coefficient.”

Constant
A constant is a number that does not change.

Polynomial

An algebraic expression, in which variable do not

whole numbers and numerical coefficients of various
terms are real numbers, is called a polynomial.

Operations of Algebraic Expressions

Addition of Algebraic Expression

To add algebraic expressions, combine the like terms
by adding the numerical coefficient and copying the
literal coefficients

example:

2x - 5y + 4x + 12y - 24x - 5y + 7x - 9y
(2x + 4x - 24x + 7x) + (-5y + 12y - 5y - 9y)

= -11x - 7 y

In dividing algebraic expression, copy the base and
subtract the exponents.
