THE NATURE OF CORONAVIRUS

Introductory Message

For the facilitator:

Welcome to the Psychosocial Support Activities for Learners on The Nature

of CORONAVIRUS!

This Self-Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed

by educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its Officer-in-
Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A. Agustin, in
partnership with the City Government of Pasig through its mayor, Honorable Victor Ma.
Regis N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum using
the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) in developing this instructional
resource.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs, namely: Communication,
Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Character while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the body
of the module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies that
will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this module.
You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to manage
their own learning. Moreover, you are expected to encourage and assist the learners as
they do the tasks included in the module.

LESSON

THE NATURE OF CORONAVIRUS

Do you know what coronavirus is?

If this is new to you, come and learn what it is.

WHAT IS CORONAVIRUS?

CORONAVIRUS is a large family of viruses that can cause illness from the
common cold to more serious illnesses such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome
(MERS-CoV) believed to be acquired in camel and Severe Acute Respiratory
Syndrome (SARS-CoV) which can be obtained from the animal civet cat. Many
coronaviruses are naturally contagious to animals, but some can also infect humans. It
is a respiratory disease caused by a virus.

Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an infectious disease caused by a new

coronavirus recently introduced to humans for the first time. The World Health
Organization (WHO) has called it a pandemic. This means that the virus has spread all
over the world. About 80% of those who have COVID-19 have mild symptoms.

Why is it called coronavirus? It is called coronavirus because according to

study, the micro structure or appearance of its tentacle resembles a crown. Virus comes
from the Latin word virus, which means poison. It is a small organism that lives inside
a living creature.

Viruses infect all kinds from animals and plants to bacteria or germs to humans.
Infectious diseases are caused by germs that enter and destroy the cells of the body. It
requires immediate suppression and careful precautions to prevent the spread.

The word germ is the tiny species of life that can only be seen with a
microscope. Everywhere there are germs. There are germs in the air we breathe, in the
water we drink and most of the foods we eat. There are germs on our clothes, on our
skin, on our furniture, around us and even on the leaves of a book. There are also germs
in our body.

Just like people, germs may be classified as good germs and bad germs. Good
germs are our friends and bad germs are our enemies. We are lucky that there are more
good germs than bad ones. Although there are very few harmful germs, they are always
threatening our lives. They cause cholera, typhoid, tuberculosis, smallpox, measles, and
other infectious diseases. When they enter our body, they produce a toxin called toxin.
The toxin makes us sick. As a protection, our body produces an anti-toxin against it.
There is a fight between toxin and anti-toxin inside the body. As the toxin prevails, the
body remains sick. Once the anti-toxins have been overcome, the body recovers.

This 2019 coronavirus disease or COVID -19 also called SARS- CoVid 2 and
2019 Novel Coronavirus, an infectious disease caused by the new coronavirus, from
simple diseases such as fever, cold and flu and will get infected will not suffer Chronic
symptoms will be cured. But others will experience a serious illness that may not be
able to control right away and will increase the number of bad germs that eventually
lead to pneumonia, especially in the elderly and those with chronic illnesses. This
disease can spread to your area, to the community or to other parties which can lead to
pandemics or human death if their resistance and physical condition are weak.
