Tutorial 2

This document contains a tutorial on angle modulation techniques in telecommunications. It includes 7 problems related to determining instantaneous frequency, calculating bandwidth, frequency deviation, and modulation index for various angle modulated signals. It also includes problems about allotting radio frequency bands and calculating the maximum number of stations that can fit within a given bandwidth while allowing for guard bands between carrier frequencies.

Tutorial 2 : Angle Modulation 2018/2019

1. Determine the instantaneous frequency in hertz of each of the following signals and state how it varies
with time t

a) 10cos[100t  sin 20t ]

b) 10cos(40t t 2 )
c) 10cos(40t t 2 )
d) cos200t cos(5sin 2t )  sin 200t sin( 5sin 2t )

2. Consider an Angle modulated signal

s(t ) 10cos[(108 )t  5sin 2 (103 )t ]
a) Find the maximum phase deviation and the maximum frequency deviation
b) Calculate its bandwidth

3. An Angle modulated signal is described by

s(t ) 10cos[2(106 )t  0.1sin(103 )t ]
a) If s(t ) is a PM signal with k p 10 , what is the function of m(t ) ?
b) If s(t ) is an FM signal with k f 10 , what is the function of m(t ) ?

4. An FM modulated wave is expressed as 𝑠 (𝑡) = 20cos⁡(8(106 )𝜋𝑡 + 9 sin(2(103 )𝜋𝑡)). Calculate;

a) The frequency deviation
b) Bandwidth of FM wave
c) Power of FM wave.

5. A sinusoidal modulating waveform of amplitude 5 Volts and a maximum frequency of 2 KHz is

applied to FM modulator, with a frequency sensitivity of 40 Hz/volt. Calculate;
a) The frequency deviation
b) Modulation index
c) Bandwidth of transmission

6. A carrier frequency-modulated with a sinusoidal signal of 2 kHz, resulting in a maximum frequency

deviation of 5 kHz.
a) Find the bandwidth of the modulated signal
b) The amplitude of the modulating signal is increased by the factor of 3 and the frequency is lowered
to 1 kHz. Find the maximum frequency deviation and the new bandwidth of the modulated signal.

7. A regional commercial FM radio is defined on an 88 MHz to 108 MHz frequency band. If each station
is allotted to a frequency deviation of ±75 kHz and 25 kHz of guard band added above and below the
carrier swing
a) What is the carrier swing frequency?
b) Calculate the total bandwidth
c) What is the maximum number of Stations that can be made available in this band
d) If the guard bands are added only below the carrier swing, what will be the maximum number of
stations that can be made available?
