Change and innovation are two interrelated terms commonly used in educational community and now a

buzzword more than even. Layman and professionals like educators use the term interchangeably. As
Owen (1971) claimed, change calls for a response while innovation requires initiative. Change is more of
making improvements to an existing curricular framework/practices. Innovation is broader in nature. It
deals an entirely novel goals, plans and strategies to be implemented. Though technically different,
change plays an absolutely necessary role for every curriculum innovation. As innovation commenced
and implemented, curriculum change may happen concurrently. Like for instance, the introduction of RA
10533, Enhanced Basic Education Curriculum where the Basic Education system was completely re-
structured and overhauled, curriculum change came into play thru the introductions of more
developmentally appropriate and relevant programs in response for areas found to be less appropriate
or futile which might serve as a barrier for the attainment of established goals. Curriculum change so to
speak can aide thru the improvements of existing K to 12 syllabus, teaching guides, learner’s materials,
equipment and facilities as well as development in teacher’s instructional practices. It can be regarded
then that curriculum change is an instrument to make curriculum innovation efficient and productive.
