Cut Scene 1: The Falcon Lands On Malta Battle 1: Breakout
Cut Scene 1: The Falcon Lands On Malta Battle 1: Breakout
As Act I opens, Ottoman land on the island of Malta. They are led by a man named Sahin, also known as "the Falcon," who is determined
to breach the defenses and take the island under Ottoman control. Malta is where Morgan is posted, and he's not ready to give up the
island to anyone.
Battle 1: Breakout
The primary objective here is to simply defend your base. You've
got a decent supply of resources, and simply must produce as many soldiers as you can.
Now, for whatever reason, all the soldiers (ally and Ottoman) can shoot through your walls. You can sort of use this to your advantage.
Double-click one of your Barracks to select them all, then right-click near the gate in the wall. This sets a rally point so any troops
produced will head there, and they'll automatically engage the enemy.
Now, on the back two Barracks, start by upgrading your Crossbowmen and your Pikemen. Then, in your front two Barracks, start
producing Crossbowmen and Pikemen at a rate of about 4 to 1. (That is, for every four Crossbowmen you produce, you should be
producing one Pikeman.) Make this easier on yourself by holding the Shift key when selecting a unit to produce, as you'll make five at a
time.
Meanwhile, locate your Morgan Black unit, and give him his own team number (hold Control and press one of your number keys). Now
you can you can simply press that number key to bring him up. Have Morgan exit the fort through the left gate and circle it
counterclockwise. Keep your eyes on your minimap, and look for any white X. Those Xs mark treasure spots, and only Morgan can
collect them. Collecting all of them will clear a bonus objective, which is always helpful. Once Morgan is finished, tell him to return to the
base to help with the defense.
Your first milestone will be when you hear Morgan request you use Pikemen to combat the Ottoman Cavalry. At that point, take your
upper-left Barracks, and change its rally point to the top-left corner of the map. Create 5 to 10 Crossbowmen from that Barracks; they
will exit out a side gate and avoid the fight.
Afterwards, you get to visit your home city, but you can't do anything in it yet. For now, just click the Continue button to move on.
A little later, Alain appears and informs Morgan that pockets of Ottoman have been found to the east. Morgan still is feeling bloodthirsty,
so he excitedly orders his men to follow him… and while they're at it, they bring a commandeered Bombard.
Once the outpost is safe, save it, then wait a moment. Some unseen scout will spot an Ottoman weapon cache; destroying these is your
primary objective here. First though, you should build up your army.
You'll want to produce Settlers until you have around ten on each resource, all the while keeping your military reinforced. You should
have about 25 Crossbowmen and 10 to 15 Hoop Throwers before proceeding. Once you're there, set the Hoop Throwers to their own
team 2, and set everyone else to team 1.
Take the whole army and head northeast with team 2 in front. Hoop Throwers decimate foot units (from Janissaries to Settlers), but are
useless against buildings. You'll come to an outpost soon; leave team 1 to their own devices, which they normally prioritize being the
destruction of enemy buildings. Manually control team 2, and use them to eliminate resistance.
This enemy outpost is pretty much all they have, so once you take out the Barracks, there will be few (if any) enemy military units sent
at you. Now, take the army and circle them counterclockwise along the edge of the mountain to find a couple more buildings that are
obscured by the fog of war. When things are clear, return the army to the top-right corner, and they'll spot the caves that need to be
breeched. Those are some pretty large caves apparently, because you can send in the entire military.
By now, you'll have built up some insane resources (especially if you've been keeping an eye on your Settlers and kept their idleness to
a minimum). Take what you've got and start producing even more units to back up your army. Send in everything into those caves, raze
all the weapons caches, and celebrate your win.
This is, of course, not happening, but Morgan is outgunned in the middle of the ocean. They quickly land at a nearby island, and prepare
to wait whilst the rest of their navy come to them.
Battle 3: PIRATES!
As Morgan's remaining two ships approach an island, they are both attacked by fireships. His smaller ship is sunk, but his flagship
remains afloat long enough for his remaining force to land. He disgustedly sees that his small expedition is pretty vulnerable, but that
they must establish an outpost and await Malta sending them more ships and supplies.
Aside from soldiers, all you start with is a covered wagon. Click it, and use it to build a Town Center a little away from the edge of the
coast. While it gets constructed, take your army and explore the island. There are a couple pockets of troops, and they're guarding some
valuable resources. Once the Town Center is finished, make some Settlers, and gather all the resources sitting out before assigning
Settlers to chop trees.
By now you should have a good buildup of resources. Once you have at least 1200 food and gold, you can use your Town Center to
upgrade to the third age. This allows for further upgrades to your units, which is especially important for your Crossbowmen.
From here, the game becomes fairly automatic. The central, large island has the most resistance of course, so you should save it till last.
Tell Morgan to collect every treasure on every little island, and you'll end up indirectly passing a secondary objective when you use a
captured covered wagon to build a second Town Center.
When you're ready for the final push against the central island,
follow Morgan's advise and bombard the area first with eight or so ships. There are a ton of military units within those walls, and they'll
make short work of any army you can produce if you just land them without a preemptive strike. In fact, it may be best to just leave
your whole military on your home island (instead of aboard the ships) when you make that attack. That way, if your ships go down, you
don't lose much.
When you're ready to land your troops, it's best to unload as many as you can… somewhere in the neighborhood of 50 to 60
Crossbowmen and some Pikemen. They WILL be assaulted, and hard. While they're fighting, try to transfer more troops over (like
Morgan), but leave any cannons on your main island.
After enough of a fight, the pirates will retreat and will only attack when you actually enter their walls. At that point, you should bring in
your cannons so you can quickly tear down buildings in your way. Once you have the third Navigational Map inside those walls, you'll
take the win.
Yep, turns out he gets the first speaking role. He tells us (but not Morgan) that he's looking for the Lake of the Moon too, but only to
keep the Circle of Ossus away from it. Morgan doesn't know this, so expect a fight.
For now, you have time to get your colony established. Build the Town Center, and you'll finally be able to access the thing that makes
Age of Empires III special. A new button will appear over your resources. Click it, and you'll get to see your home city. Select a resource
you want it to ship, and it will appear by your Town Center. You have two choices for now: you can send 2 Settlers, or 300 food. In the
opening seconds of the game, all you would spend food on is Settlers, so you may as well save a step and just get your Settlers sent.
Note: if you send units, they will appear by your Town Center once the timer finishes. If you send resources, they will appear as boxes
by the Town Center and must be collected by Settlers; they will not be added directly to your supply or anything. If you have any idle
villagers, they'll immediately start collecting anything in the boxes. Otherwise, you'll have to pass the order to someone.
With that done, keep producing Settlers, build a Barracks and Outpost, you know the drill. While your Settlers work, take Morgan and
head south from your landing point. You'll find an outpost of natives, and Morgan will suggest we ally with them. Sounds good to me.
Morgan can build a building called a Trading Post; place it directly next to the native village. (Settlers can do this too, but your Settlers
are busy gathering resources at the moment. They shouldn't be on the front line anyway.)
Once the Trading Post is built, you can click it to perform unit upgrades and produce special units from the natives. Here's the cool thing:
any military unit made from these Trading Posts does NOT count on your population. All you're limited by is your resources and a
possible build limit; you shouldn't go crazy making troops (especially because you need to save those resources for other things), but it's
a good way to bolster your military when you have a surplus.
Tiny pockets of Janissaries will occasionally pop up; sometimes they don't even fight. A bare army or even just your Outpost will provide
plenty of defense. In the meantime, build your army up as you have before, and have Morgan explore to the northwest to find another
native village. Once you set up your second Trading Post, you'll be cleared to attack the Ottoman Town Center, but don't do it quite yet.
Take your army to the southeast of your Town Center, but follow the coast. You'll find an Ottoman Dock that you can destroy for some
experience points. Once you do so, take your flagship and search the water for any fishing vessels; take 'em out, and you sabotage the
Ottoman' ability to produce units.
Now there's nothing to do but build up your army. Get an Artillery Foundry up so you can build some cannons. Once again, there are a
ton of soldiers behind those walls, so you'll need a good 50 or more Crossbowmen and others to fight. In order to get all the soldiers you
need, you'll probably need at least 15 Settlers working on food, and 10 or 15 working on wood. Once you destroy the Town Center, the
Ottoman will run, and you'll take the win.
As he ponders this, another soldier comes to the camp and gets killed by an animal Morgan saw on the stone tablets back in Malta. He
deduces that the Circle of Ossus may be in the area, which is not exactly the most settling thought.
As you take a few steps east, Morgan sees a few Aztec warriors who are mining gold. Head toward them, and you'll be attacked by a
couple units. Take them out, and you'll convert the warriors to your side.
Continue onto the Aztec village, and use Morgan to build a Trading Post there. A large chunk of the map becomes explored, and some of
your Settlers and a Covered Wagon will appear out of nowhere. Use the Covered Wagon to build a Town Center, and start getting the
Settlers to gather resources, build Barracks, and everything else to establish your town.
Now, you're on a race here. One of the Aztecs will run off and try to get to another village to get an Aztec army. Meanwhile, the area will
be constantly rushed by large pockets of units. Your army can take out the first few pockets all right, but you can't do much without
reinforcements, so get that Barracks up fast.
The enemies' targets are the three temples surrounding the plaza
by the way, but if they try attacking one, and they come under fire, they'll worry about what's attacking them instead of the temples
themselves. You can help distract them by building an Outpost at each temple, but only do that if you have enough resources to keep
your Barracks churning out units.
After the first couple waves of enemies, Morgan deduces that there are other small pockets of captured miners, and freeing them will
add soldiers to your army (without affecting your population, no less). Now, going after them is a gamble, because you don't want to
commit your military to too long of a side trip. It's recommended to save before going after the miners, so if you mistimed it, you
haven't wasted too much time.
Around the same time, you'll start getting a few small units of reinforcements from the Aztecs. These guys will be colored cyan (light
blue), and will remain out of your control. However, they're smart, and will attack anyone who comes near them. You'll also see a timer
at the top of the screen telling you how long it will be before the large army arrives.
Until the natives arrive, you're pretty much on a reactionary mode. Attack when your temples are threatened, defend Morgan as much
as possible, and so on. Meanwhile, keep your economy strong, and keep your Barracks in full throttle.
Once the army arrives, your objectives change to taking out the
Spanish base, and you get control of the natives. The native army will be fine in defending the temples, so take Morgan and his army,
and go around freeing any miners you've neglected. Meanwhile, get an Artillery Foundry up, and start producing cannons; you'll need
them for the siege. (You'll have to upgrade to Age III at the Town Center to do this.)
There are two paths into the main Spanish city. Both are walled, but you have two armies. Assign the cannons to Morgan's army and
units; the natives don't need them. Send the natives north of your camp, then tell them to attack-move into the enemy city to the east.
At the same time, send Morgan's army east of your camp, then tell them to attack-move north into the Spanish city. By hitting them in
two directions simultaneously, their army will either split and be easier to handle, or overload one side and leave the other undefended.
Either way, you'll make short work of the city, and once the Town Center is down, you'll win the map.
Cut Scene 7: Right Where We Stand
A soldier asks Morgan what the Spanish wanted from the Aztecs, since there's no gold or any other treasure. Morgan verbally smacks
him, and tells him that they wanted the map to the Lake of the Moon. Lo and behold, the map was actually in the brown stone of the
plaza! With its location committed to memory, Morgan sets out to find it.
Meanwhile, our old pal Sahin has been captured by the Spanish. He's being interrogated by Delgado. Delgado doesn't get any useful
information out of Sahin, but does upset the Falcon when he declares that he wants the water of the Lake of the Moon for himself to sell
to Spain.
Sahin warns that the Circle of Ossus is around and will beatdown Delgado if he's not careful, but Delgado ain't hearing any of it. He is
totally confident in his guns' ability to rip some Ossus flesh, and orders Sahin to placed in the brig. Uh… why do bad guys never heed
warnings? Morons.
As he and the harbormaster are talking, Lizzie the Pirate pops up.
She wants to know why Morgan wants to go to Florida so bad. At first, Morgan isn't tattling, but Lizzie uses her charms and gets him to
at least say that he's after the Spanish. Lizzie wants the Spanish gold and has ships; Morgan doesn't care one iota about the cash, and
grudgingly makes a bargain. He wants Lizzie to take him to Florida, and he promises to give her all the Spanish money to do so.
Lizzie unpredictably declines this, at least at first. She realizes (with some convincing) that her horde of pirates would get demolished by
the Spanish military, but she still doesn't fully trust Morgan. As she walks away, she implies that she's going to be testing Morgan and
his knights' abilities. Why do I have a bad feeling about this?
Instead of needing to kill a bunch of Spanish or Ottoman here, the objective is to earn 8000 XP by doing tasks around the island within a
time limit. Your first task is to save the villagers who are being attacked to the west; your army will shred the attackers, and you will
gain control of pretty much all the buildings and Settlers in the area. After that, you need to build a single stable to clear another
objective.
Most of the enemies you'll be facing here are natives who shoot blowguns at you. These guys are essentially archers, who are weak
against cavalry. If you check out your stable, you'll see that you can create Hussars, but they're quite expensive in food and gold. The
computer was kind enough to give you two mills, so you should load both with Settlers. You'll want a few guys chopping trees so you
have wood to build Outposts, but otherwise only focus on farmers and miners.
Create some Hussars, then follow the dirt road to the south. There
will be some resistance, but as long as you've added about 15 soldiers or so, you'll be in okay shape. Get that Trading Post up, then click
it and examine the options. With Trading Posts, every so often a cart will arrive and give you something. The first level of Trading Posts
only gives to a small XP boost. That's okay for this match, but later on, you'll want to upgrade Trading Posts because you'll get resource
shipments instead of XP. Think about it: unlimited free food, wood, or gold at regular intervals!
No time to think about that now though, because you've got another task. One of the villagers got his canoe stolen, and Lizzie wants you
to get it back and extract a little capital punishment on the thieves. The irony does not reach them that a pirate is angry for something
being stolen, but who cares.
Your time limit may be running a little thin here if you took too long building troops, so immediately send whatever army you have to the
pinged portion of your map. Splat the enemy, and the nearby canoe will convert to you. Load your army in, then bring them north back
to Lizzie. Add the native boy to your army's team, and reload them into the canoe.
Sail to the island to the east, and land on the north end. A village is sitting in the middle of it, and as you approach it, the boy you're
escorting will revert back to computer control and rejoin his tribe. The chief gives you a bunch of warriors in thanks and tells you that
some people stole an artifact from his village to the south. Retrieve it, he says, and you will no longer be randomly attacked by bad
guys. Well geez, if we only knew about that at the beginning of the match…
Anyway, do as he says, and it should actually push you over 8000 XP. Load everyone back into the canoe (you DID leave it by the north
village, didn't you?), and sail back to Lizzie. When Morgan comes close to her, you take the win.
I mention this because your ships will be attacked soon by a couple Spanish ships. The Snap Dragon is expendable, but the others are
not. The fight will not be difficult, but you'll want the Snap Dragon taking the damage if you can help it.
Once you sink the enemies, you'll be told that a Spanish treasure ship is north of your position. It's guarded by an Outpost, and sitting
beside that is a small walled area holding a few units that you will convert to your side once free. Now, what you need to do is get the
Blanco to land close to the coast and have its siege units disembark. Have them take out the Outpost from outside its range, then
demolish the prison walls.
Now, this treasure ship is not an actual ship, as the popup window tells you. Actually, it's a never-ending supply of coin that slowly gives
you some at regular intervals (the term is a "coin trickle"). It's a little in the open, so you'll want it protected.
Now, this is as safe a place as any to disembark, so do so. Leave the ships to guard the treasure ships, then establish your colony. You'll
come under attack pretty quickly, both by land and by sea. If your ships are taken down, don't worry; just try to get a dock up as
quickly as possible and protect it with a couple Outposts.
After the initial waves of attacks, the match becomes pretty easy. Grab your army and start exploring outward. You'll find more treasure
ships, which you capture by taking out their adjacent Outposts. Also you'll find super-powerful Forts, which can shred your army and
take forever to take down. Mortars can fire from outside the range a Fort can hit, but Falconets cannot.
The main enemy base is on the west side of the map, and around it are about eight treasure ships. All you need to capture are six, and
the match is yours.
Morgan realizes he's been betrayed. For revenge, Sahin suggests that we destroy the Fountain of Youth so no one (especially Alain) can
have it. Although Lizzie is lacking gunpowder, Sahin has it coming out of every orifice, so Fireships will be unit of the day.
Your Fireships are on their way, and it really doesn't matter if they're taken down or they succeed (at best, they'll lightly damage the
Fountain), so take your whole army and head toward the large cannon. If you don't, it will turn against your army and decimate them,
so you need to do it quickly.
With the cannon in your possession, you'll want to assign it its own
group number so you can call it up anytime. Now, a little about it… it's a very long range, but it can't reach every corner of the map. (For
that matter, it can't reach every corner of your island.) Also, it has a minimal range; that is, if a unit is too close, the gun can't target it.
Enemy ships can get within that range, so you'll want to build a couple Outposts near it to defend it. (You won't be able to build the
Outposts directly next to the giant cannon due to terrain, but place them as close as you can.) Finally, if the cannon takes enough
damage, it can be repaired for a cost of coin, similar to other buildings. Still, you'll want to watch it so it doesn't get damaged too badly.
Finally, this cannon can be recaptured, and if it is, you're screwed, so always have at least 10 units guarding it at all times.
A Covered Wagon and some settlers will then appear on your island. Coincidentally, they appear right beside a mine, some berries, and
some trees. Set up your Town Center and otherwise establish your economy (especially as many houses and you can whip out).
Meanwhile, use the army and the giant cannon to obliterate the Circle's city, which is the orange-colored buildings and units on the same
island. The cannon is actually best used on free will (as opposed to your direct orders) unless there's an emergency, because it will
prioritize units and ships over buildings.
Eventually, your tiny army will probably be beaten back by the Circle. Either way, you don't have to destroy them completely here. If
your army gets too thinned, have them retreat to your Town Center to reinforce them and continue getting the economy running. Finish
decking out your army, then try again and finish off the Circle's camp.
Once the Circle is done, build a second Town Center in roughly the same place as the Circle's Town Center was. Also around this time,
you'll get a massive influx of army, so you'll need to probably build a bunch more houses to support the population. You're pretty safe,
so you can actually turn the giant cannon on the Fountain of Youth to speed things up.
With your economy in full swing and the Circle reduced to nothing,
you pretty much have two options. You can either constantly build Fireships and keep up the pressure on the Fountain, or you can send
the army to the other side of the ocean and start hammering the enemy's base. Even if you do the latter, you'll have to attack the
Fountain to win, but that way you will have less resistance. I enjoying going for total domination, so I'm attacking the red-colored
baddies, at least to wound them.
Although it may not look like it at first, your island and the enemy's island are connected. (I guess that doesn't make them islands then,
huh?) There's a strip of land that traces the map counterclockwise that you can use to head over to the enemy. Leave your heroes
(Morgan, Lizzie, and Sahin) back at the giant cannon so they don't get stranded if something goes horribly wrong.
Now, you probably won't be able fully destroy the enemies. There are a TON of troops inside their stone walls. However, by destroying
their nearby Dock and the Outposts, you can protect your Fireships as they smack the Fountain. When it seems clear (that is, when you
reached the stone walls), lay off the ground attack and go by sea. Your Fireships can easily finish whatever the giant cannon didn't
manage to do.
The Circle of Ossus is still alive and wants to do more than wonder, however…
