Assignment 1:
•science is a knowledge about the natural world that is based on facts learned through expirements and
observation.
•science is an area of study that deals with the natura world as (biology or physics).
2.) Do you think thought expirements is still useful in science in the present time?
•Yes, because thought experiment is useful in all aspects of life, not just science. Thought experiments
allow us to explore possibilities, ponder scenarios, while applying what we already know about the
world in order to give structure and order to our “experiments”.
•No, I think church should respect and support the drive of the people to make use of their knowledge
and expertise as a means of finding improvements and advancements or our current living
•Darwin's greatest contribution to science is that he completed the Copernican Revolution by drawing
out for biology the notion of nature as a system of matter in motion governed by natural laws. ... They
jointly ushered in the beginning of science in the modern sense of the word: explanation through
natural laws.
5.) How can Darwin's evolutionary theory influence the following fields in modern times; a) economy, b)
agriculture, c) political science, d) religion
a.) economy
-From an economic point of view it means the poor can go to the wall. It’s survival of the fittest and
anyone with some flaw that might weaken humanity would not be allowed to breed and create more
weaklings.
b.) agriculture
-That evolution occured, in agriculture for example, was one of the observations that the theory of
evolution was explaining.Basically, farmers and breeders had been using the observation of evolution…
that they could apply selection pressures to breed for traits that they wanted. This lead to some
significant changes over many generations
-Ever since it was first properly formulated by Darwin, the theory has been used to advance a variety of
political projects. It is not only “social Darwinist” supporters of laissez-faire capitalism who have claimed
that their political ideals were grounded in evolutionary theory. So have Nazis, communists, anarchists
and Fabian social engineers. Today, Darwinism is invoked as part of a campaign against religion by
people who claim to be liberals. Behind the rival political programmes to which Darwinism has been
yoked lies Huxley’s belief that humankind is now in a position to direct its future evolution.
d.) religion
-On the Origin of Species reflects theological views. Though he thought of religion as a tribal survival
strategy, Darwin still believed that God was the ultimate lawgiver, and later recollected that at the time
he was convinced of the existence of God as a First Cause and deserved to be called a theist.
