What are your Western, Eastern, and Filipino characteristics?

My Western characteristics are being frank and having a small circle of friends. When I
was a young age, I used to be frank with my playmates. Most of them think that it is a bad
attitude of mine because I could hurt their feelings but for myself I don’t think it is bad because
by being frank, I am able to say what is on my mind and I can express my feelings easily. I also
have a small circle of friends because I want my life to be as private and simple as possible.
When I have a problem, I only share it to my best friend but when it comes to family problems I
don't share it with anyone. I just keep it to myself and face it as long as I can. My Eastern
characteristic is being a family person. When it comes to decision making, I always think about
my family first. As long as possible, I want to value my parents' decision for me because I
believe that parents know what is best for their child. And lastly, my Filipino characteristic is not
being time conscious or what they call “Filipino time”. All my life I believe that taking “your time”
is the best because rushing is not good. I know it is a bad practice and right now I'm trying to
practice to be on-time in every situation.

Do you agree with the differentiation between West and East?

Yes because it clearly describes the characteristics of Western and the Eastern and
what are their differences. Western and Eastern citizens are different in culture, beliefs, and
attitude because they are located in different parts of the world which leads to having different
life practices.

What can you find about the Philippines distinction?

I found that the Philippines has a similarity to Western because Filipinos practice
confronting the challenge rather than running away from it. Filipinos are known for being brave
because our heroes fight to gain our freedom, we used to think that solving the problem is better
than turning back.

What are the factors that make the Philippines similar or different from its Asian neighbors?
I think that the Philippines is similar to its Asian neighbors for being connected to others
unlimitedly. Asians love having in a group of people and so are the Filipinos. We used to be
connected to our family, friends, and open to the community. We value others' opinions to help
us grow as a person. We help each other who are in need without hesitations.
The Philippines is different from its Asian neighbors by religion. Here in the Philippines,
most of the population is Christian. Christians are those people who believe in the Triune God
while most of the Asian countries are Buddhist who believe in Buddhism. It is because the
Philippines is colonized by the Spaniards who spread Christianity all over the world.

Is there also a difference between regions or ethnolinguistic groups in the Philippines?

Yes. Here in the Philippines every region shares different cultures, beliefs, and dialects. I
believe that there are 17 regions in the country who share different cultures and beliefs and
there are 100+ dialects spoken in the country. So, people who lived in Batangas have
differences from people who lived in Mindoro. For example, Batangeños used to say “are and
dine” while Mindoreños don’t. For native people like, Zambales have Aetas, Mindoro have
Mangyans, Mountain Province has Igorots and many more. For dialects, most people in Luzon
speak Tagalog and Ilocano while in Visayas they speak Bisaya, and Waray, in Mindanao they
speak Cebuano. Even though regions in the Philippines have differences, Filipins always share
something in common which is the Filipono language.
