EEE 1 1st Semester 2018-2019 Homework 2

Due 20 September 2018, 5:00 pm.

1. Given: A = 4, B = 4∠60°, C = 2 + j3. Solve for the following. Express your answers
both in rectangular form and in polar form.
a) A+B-C
b) AB/C

2. Use phasors to determine the sum of y1 and y2. Answer should be in time domain.
a) y1 = 30 cos (wt - 45°), y2 = 40 cos (wt + 60°)
b) y1 = 30 cos (wt - 45°), y2 = 40 sin (wt + 60°)

3. Transform the following circuit to its frequency domain equivalent then solve for
the equivalent impedance seen from terminals a and b. Assume w = 25 rad/sec.

4. Transform the circuit below to its frequency domain equivalent then set up the
mesh analysis equations for the mesh currents shown. v1 = 133 cos(14t + 77°) V
and v2 = 55 cos(14t + 22°) V.

5. Use phasor-based analysis and Thevenin’s theorem to get an expression for iL(t)
in the circuit below.
6. Calculate the real and reactive power delivered by the current 4-j2 A to the
following loads:
a) Z= 9W b) Z = -j1000 W
c) Z = 1+j3 W d) Z = 6Ð32° W

7. For the circuit shown, determine the complex power delivered by the voltage
source and the power factor seen by the voltage source.

8. A factory has the following connected loads:

L1: 16 kW and 18 kVAR

L2: 10 kVA at 0.6 pf lead
L3: 8 kW at unity pf

The factory gets power from a substation some distance away. The impedance of
the transmission line connecting the factory to the generator is 0.01+j0.08 W. The
generator voltage VG is adjusted so the measured voltage at the factory VL is 250
volts rms.
a) What are the total real and total reactive power supplied to the factory?
b) What is the current flowing in the transmission line?
c) What are the real and reactive power lost in the transmission line?
d) At what voltage and power factor does the generator operate?
9. For the circuit show, determine
a. the voltages v1(t)and v2(t) (take note of the dot markings)
b. the average power delivered to each of the resistors

10. A transformer’s nameplate reads 2300/230V, 25kVA. If the transformer is supplied

2300 Vrms at its primary and the two loads at its secondary are 8 kW at unity power
factor and 15 kVA 0.8 pf lag,
a. What is the primary current?
b. How many kilowatts can the transformer still supply to a third load if that load
operates at 0.95 pf lag?
