(2) 33, 24
(3) 34, 23
(4) 44, 13

6. A two digit number is such that the product of the digits is 8. When 18 is added to the number, the
digits are reversed. The number is
(1) 1 8
(2) 2 4
(3) 8 1
(4) 4 2
7. The perimeter of a rectangle is 82 m and its area is 400m 2 . The breadth of the rectangle is
(1) 25 m
(2) 16 m
(3) 9 m
(4) 20 m

8. The distance between the centres of equal circles each of radius 3 cm is 10 cm. The length of a
transverse common tangent is
(1) 4 cm
(2) 6 cm
(3) 8 cm
(4) 10 cm

9. If 20 articles cost Rs. 90, the cost of 9 articles is :

(1) Rs. 45
(2) Rs. 40.50
(3) Rs.4.50
(4) None of these

10. With Rs.1000, one can buy 4 pairs of trousers or 8 shirts. What is the amount required to buy 3
pairs of trousers and 3 shirts ?
(1) Rs.375
(2) Rs.562.50
(3) Rs.750
(4) Rs.1125
Detailed Solutions

1. (x + 1) (x + 4) (x +2) (x + 3) = 120
⇔ 9x 2 + 5x + 4) (x 2 + 5x + 6) = 120
⇔ (y + 4) (y + 6) = 120, where x 2 + 5x = y
⇔ y 2 + 10y – 96 = 0 ⇔ (y + 16) (y – 6) = 0
⇔ y = –16 or y = 6.
Now, x 2 + 5x = –16 ⇔ x 2 + 5x + 16 = 0 ⇔ x is imaginary [as D < 0]
x 2 + 5x = 6 ⇔ x 2 + 5x – 6 = 0 ⇔ (x + 6) (x – 1) = 0 ⇔ x = –6 or 1. Ans.(3)

2. Given Eqn. is : 4x − 3 = 6 − 2x + 3

⇔ 4x – 3 = 36 + (2x + 3) – 12 2x + 3

⇔ 21 – x = 6 2x + 3 ⇔ (21 – x) 2 = 36 (2x + 3)
⇔ x 2 – 114x + 333 = 0 ⇔ (x – 111) (x –3) = 0 ⇔ x = 111 or x = 3. Ans.(4)

52 25
3. Given Eqn. is 5 × 5 x + = 126 or 5y + = 126, where y = 5 x .
5x y

1
Thus, 5y 2 – 126y + 25 = 0 ⇔ (y – 25) (5y – 1) = 0 ⇔ y = 25 or y = .
5
Now, 5 x = 25 = 5 2 ⇒ x = 2.

1
And, 5 x = = 5– 1 ⇒ x = –1.
5
∴ Solution set is {–1, 2}. Ans.(2)
4. Let the parts be x and (57 – x).
∴ x(57 – x) = 782 ⇔ x 2 – 57x + 782 = 0
⇔ (x – 34) (x – 23) = 0
⇔ x = 34 or x = 23. So, the required parts are 34 and 23. Ans.(3)
5. Let the number be x. Then,

1 41
x + = ⇔ 20x 2 – 41x + 20 = 0
x 20

5 4
⇔ (4x – 5) (5x – 4) = 0 ⇔ x = or x = .
4 5

5
So, x = . Ans.(1)
4

6. Let tens digit = x. Then, unit digit = .
x

FG
∴ 10x +
8 IJ 8 72
H x K
+ 18 = 10 ×
x
+ x or 9x –
x
+ 18 = 0

8
or x – + 2 = 0 or x 2 + 2x – 8 = 0 or (x + 4) (x + 2) = 0.
x
∴ x = 2.
∴ Ten’s digit = 2 and Unit digit = 4. So, number = 24. Ans.(2)
7. Semi-perimeter = 41. Let length = x and breadth = (41 – x).
∴ x(41 – x) = 400 ⇔ x 2 – 41x + 400 = 0
⇔ (x – 16) (x – 25) = 0 ⇔ x = 16 or 25.
∴ Breadth = 16m. Ans.(2)
8. The transverse common tangent to two equal circles
bisects the line joining their centres. A
∴ OC = 5 cm, OA = 3 cm, CB = 5 cm and OB = 3 cm.
O'
O C
∴ AC = OC2 − OA2 = 52 − 32 4 cm. So, AB = 2AC = 8 cm.
B

Ans.(3)
9. Less articles, less cost, (Direct Proportion)

∴ 20 : 9 :: 90 : x ⇔ x =
FG 9 × 90IJ = Rs. 40.50. Ans.(2)
H 20 K
10. 4 pairs of trousers ≡ 8 shirts
3 pairs of trousers + 3 shirts ≡ 9 shirts.
More shirts, more cost (Direct)

∴ 8 : 9 :: 1000 : x ⇔ =
FG 9 × 1000 IJ = 1125. Ans.(4)
H 8 K
