CHAPTER III

METHODOLOGY

This chapter gave an outline of research methods that were followed in the study.

It provided information and description of research design, locale, sources of data,

research instruments, and data gathering procedure that are used.

Research Design

The quote, “we know not through our intellect but through our experience”

(Merleau-Ponty, n.d.), explains that we are gaining more intellect through our

experiences. Since, this study aims to obtain information from different respondents as to

why they experienced and how they overcome culture shock in transferring from a public

to a private school, the researchers will conduct interviews to their respondents who are

connected or related to our topic and will use phenomenological method for their

research design. A phenomenological design is an approach that concentrates with the

perception and experiences of the respondents in a more detailed way. Thus, the

researchers chose this design because it will help them in understanding the data they will

attain and will be able to interpret information or data more clearly.

Locale

The site selected as the place of study is the school where the researchers are

currently enrolled in. The school is named Lyceum of the Philippines University-Cavite,

an international school aiming to produce professional and globally competitive

graduates. The institution is located at Governors drive, General Trias City, Cavite and is

headed by Mr. Mhar Angelo Bayot, the Headmaster of the school. The school was chosen

due to the surge of new students brought by implementation of K-12 curriculum; these

new students, specifically, the students who came from public school, will be the target

participants of this study.

Sources of Data

For the study purpose, both primary and secondary sources are used. The primary

data collected are from grade 11 Accountancy, Business and Management students of

Lyceum of the Philippines University-Cavite through interviews. While, the secondary

data collected are from the previous study of other researchers. Moreover, these primary

and secondary sources cover all aspects of the study. The primary data are connected

through the experiences and the way of response of the respondents. Furthermore, the

secondary data conveys the former studies that the researchers can use to make the study

more credible. Overall, these data collected will serve a purpose in our research study.

Research Instruments

The researchers decided to use interviews as the data collection instrument for this

study. The grade 11 Accountancy, Business and Management students from the Lyceum

of the Philippines University-Cavite are the target respondents of the research. The

interview questions aspire to attain appropriate information regarding culture shock from

the response of the interviewee. The reasons of culture shock from transferring to public

school to a private school as well as the possible strategies that can be done during the

dilemma will be answered through the list of questions.

Data Gathering Procedure

The researchers will write a letter asking for the permission of the headmaster to

have a proper permit to use some of their Accountancy, Business and Management

students as part of the study. Right then, they will request for the approval of the current

teacher of the student that they were going to interview and if some instances rise they

will go for the second option which is the interview of students during their free time.

The respondents of the interview are those transferee Accountancy, Business and

Management students who came from public school and transferred to Lyceum of the

Philippines University-Cavite.
