Believed to be the first Central graduate to play in baseball’s major leagues, the speedy Bartee has made his mark as a rangy outfielder for three teams and
now as a coach for the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Central all-state player accepted a scholarship to Creighton, helping the Bluejays to their only appearance
in the College World Series in 1991. Drafted by Baltimore in 1993, he made his major-league debut with the Detroit Tigers in 1996. Over parts of six

seasons with the Tigers, Cincinnati Reds and Colorado Rockies, Bartee became best known for his speed on the base paths and slick defense. He swiped

and base running coach.
During a globe-trotting three-decade career as a U.S. State Department diplomat, Brown has served her country while promoting peace, security,
women’s rights, and stronger ties with the rest of the world. At Central, Brown studied both French and German before moving on to graduate from
Natalie Georgetown University and pass the exam to join the foreign service. Her State Department career has taken her to numerous postings around the world,
including deputy chief of mission to the U.S. Mission to the UN Agencies in Rome, deputy chief of the U.S. embassy in Tunisia, economic counselor in

Jordan, political chief in Kuwait, and assignments in Ethiopia and Guinea. U.S. postings included serving as senior watch officer in the State Department
operations center during the 9/11 attacks. Her career reached a new climax in 2016 when she took over as chief diplomat of the U.S. embassy in Eritrea.
Her job isn’t without danger. While in Tunisia, the mission came under attack just days after the deadly attack on the U.S. facility in Benghazi, Libya. But
she said she considers it the “best job in the world” to be able to represent the American people around the globe.
In a long career as an Ivy League history professor, Chudacoff has proven a gifted educator and prolific writer, co-authoring an influential college history
text and authoring numerous other books spanning diverse academic interests. Even before coming to Central, Chudacoff’s strong academic bent earned
him the nickname “The Professor.” A distinguished academic career at the University of Chicago, where he earned his doctorate degree, put him on that
Howard career path. He began teaching at Brown University in Rhode Island in 1970, became a full professor a decade later, then served three years as chair of
Chudacoff the school’s history department. Chudacoff’s work in the classroom and caring mentoring of students was recognized in 2003 when he became among
CHS 1961 the first recipients of a new Brown award for excellence in teaching and advising. His scholarship includes the co-authoring of a college history text that’s
now in its 10th edition. Other books he’s written show his broad academic interests, from social mobility in early Omaha and evolution of urban society to
American age-consciousness, bachelorhood and how children play. Since 2002, he has held an endowed chair at Brown devoted to American history and
urban studies.
Over nearly four decades with The Omaha World-Herald, Cordes has been recognized as one of Nebraska’s most influential journalists. He joined the
paper’s sports department months after graduating from Central in 1981. Upon graduating from UNO he joined the news staff covering crime. He went
on to serve six years as statehouse bureau chief and has since specialized in public policy, special projects and investigations. He’s the only five-time

Cordes light on poverty in north Omaha, revealed a finance scandal that forced the resignation of the chancellor of his college alma mater, and uncovered
CHS 1981 excessive executive pay at Goodwill, leading to wholesale leadership changes. His story on a 2007 mass shooting was featured in the Poynter Institute’s
book “Best Newspaper Writing,” and he has won national awards for deadline writing, sports writing and investigative reporting. He served as president
of the Omaha Press Club and authored three books, two on Nebraska football history and one on an Omaha serial killer. His proudest accomplishment,
though, is fathering two 2017 Central grads, daughters Thelma and Lucy.
Emery’s life has been marked by his success and leadership in Nebraska’s insurance industry as well as his public service, particularly on boards
overseeing higher education. After obtaining a law degree in 1970, Emery helped found the RD Marcotte agency in Omaha, an affiliate of Mutual of
Omaha. As vice president for sales, he helped make Marcotte the No. 1 sales operation within Mutual. In 1987, he became a general agent and regional
John vice president for Lincoln-based Ameritas, overseeing 110 offices. He then was asked to start an independent operation for TransAmerica, establishing
Emery more than 90 offices across the country under the name John Emery & Associates. Emery served as state president for four different insurance and
CHS 1956 financial services associations. He also served on numerous other public and nonprofit boards, including two years on the Metropolitan Community
College board. Emery was also appointed by Gov. Ben Nelson to serve on Nebraska’s Postsecondary Commission for Higher Education. During nine
years on the commission, he spearheaded an initiative to make it easier to transfer credits between four-year institutions. His efforts were credited by
Nelson for breaking down barriers to obtaining degrees, saving students time and money.
As a pioneering woman in Omaha’s medical community, Dr. Frank showed a commitment to improving patient care while inspiring many women to
pursue careers in medicine. When Frank entered the University of Nebraska’s medical school, many still believed women’s proper role in medicine
should be limited to serving as nurses. She graduated with her MD in 1943 and trained to be an anesthesiologist at Bellevue Hospital in New York. She
then returned to her hometown and helped start the anesthesiology department at Methodist Hospital. Petite, tough and tireless, Frank never took a sick Muriel
day during her four-decade career, which included 15 years as chief of anesthesiology at Methodist. In 1989, she became the first woman to head the

“Shattered Ceiling” award.
Founding and operating businesses across a diverse range of fields, Friedman over four decades proved a successful salesman, trouble-shooter and
entrepreneur. After graduating from the University of Nebraska at Omaha in 1969, Friedman acquired an insurance agency that within 12 years had
grown to the second-largest independent agency in Omaha. After it was purchased by another firm, he served as the executive vice president of retail for
a regional bank. He then, in 1988, took over as president and chief operator of a struggling firm producing advertising directories for wedding services Sanford
in 80 markets across the nation. Over eight years, he helped turn it to profitability and moved it into internet sales, allowing it to later be sold and merged

shopper campaigns, post-sale telephone surveys and product evaluations, growing it to 40 employees before selling it in 2001. Over the next decade, he
helped a number of other Omaha businesses address specific challenges they faced before retiring. Friedman has also served on numerous community
boards, including Girls Club of Omaha, the Omaha Symphony, Jewish Federation of Omaha and Anti-Defamation League.
Phillips led the Urban League chapter in Grand Rapids through the turbulent civil rights struggles of the 1950s and 1960s, serving as a calm and strong
force against racial discrimination. A state record-setter in track, Phillips earned a scholarship to Marquette University and later got his master’s degree at
Fisk. When Phillips took over the Grand Rapids Urban League in 1946, most restaurants refused to serve blacks, and they were denied skilled jobs and
red-lined into poor neighborhoods. But using patient persuasion—“an inch here and an inch there”--he changed attitudes. “Patiently, doggedly, Paul
intelligently, he countered every argument against integration, dissuaded those who called for violence, did his homework, kept his finger on the pulse of Phillips
his town, and slowly became the single most important force for racial justice Grand Rapids has ever known,” Monsignor Hugh Beahan wrote upon CHS 1932
Phillips’ death in 1976. In 1972, Phillips received an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Grand Valley State College. Phillips also became the
first African-American elected to the school board in Grand Rapids, held several other local offices and advised President Gerald R. Ford on matters of
race. His legacy lives on in Grand Rapids, where the recreation center at the Boys and Girls Club is named in his honor.
As a crusading young prosecuting attorney in 1930s Omaha, Smith helped break the grip of the political machine that long controlled the city. After
graduating from Central and then Harvard Law School, Smith returned to his hometown in 1929 as an assistant U.S. attorney. In that role, the
prosecutor took on Tom Dennison, the underworld boss whose political machine and crime syndicate had gripped Omaha for over three decades. In
1932, the 27-year-old Smith risked his own life to bring criminal indictments against Dennison and 58 associates on charges of conspiracy and violation Edson
of the Prohibition Act. A fixed jury spared Dennison from conviction, but he lost in the court of public opinion. After the trial publicly exposed Smith
Dennison’s bootlegging, gambling, violence, protection payments and network of dirty cops, a reform ticket at the next year’s election swept the machine CHS 1922
out of power. Smith soon after resigned and spent a half century in private practice, three times arguing before the U.S. Supreme Court. He died in 1988,
but his legal legacy has lived on. His two daughters also followed him into law, one becoming the first woman to serve as a federal judge in Nebraska.
Thomas used his financial acumen to help build ConAgra Inc. into one of the world’s biggest food companies and one of Omaha’s most significant

with annual sales of $50 million. In those early years, he served as the company’s finance department and personnel department, ran a mill in Sheridan,
Wyoming and helped clean the offices on Saturdays. In 1969, he became the company’s vice president of finance and added the titles of treasurer in 1974 Lawrence
and corporate secretary in 1991, effectively serving as a key right-hand man to ConAgra’s CEO. By the time Thomas retired in 1996 after 36 years with
