Module 1 - Les #3 Application of Equilibrium PDF

This document is a lesson plan on applying equilibrium equations from the Department of Civil Engineering at Holy Angel University. It discusses using equilibrium equations to determine external reactions of structures. Key concepts covered include determining support reactions for statically determinate and stable structures using the equations of equilibrium for the sum of forces in the x and y directions and the sum of moments. Several example problems are provided to demonstrate solving for unknown reactions. References are also listed for additional resources on structural analysis and equilibrium equations.

LESSON #3: Application Equilibrium Equations

In this lesson, you will be able to solve the external reactions of the structures using equilibrium equations.

All concepts sample problems and figures are from the followings books,

 Hibbeler, R. C.(2017). Structural analysis 9th ed. Boston, Pearson

 Leet, Kenneth M. (2011). Fundamentals of structural analysis, McGraw-Hill, Boston

 Kassimali, Aslam (2010). Structural analysis, Cengage Learning, Stamford, CT USA

 J Rungamornrat (2011). Fundamental of Structural Analysis, Rungamornrat, Bangkok Thailand

Engineering structures must remain in equilibrium both externally and internally when subjected to a system
of forces.

The equations of equilibrium use to determine the support reactions for statically determinate and stable
structures on a plane.

Equilibrium Equations:

∑ 𝑭𝒚 = 𝟎 ∑𝑭𝒙 = 𝟎 ∑𝑴 = 𝟎

Supports:

To ensure that a structure or a structural element remains in its required position under all loading conditions,
it is attached to a foundation or connected to other structural members by supports.
