Developing Professional Practice

Excel – training exercise


After watching the Excel Introduction Powerpoint, complete the training exercise which will take
you step by step through various tasks on Excel to ensure you understand the basic functions.
From the SOL unit page, Excel skills tab, open the Excel spreadsheet titled Excel Training
Exercise.

USING THE FILL HANDLE TOOL


Task 1: Left click on cell A1, you will see a square in bottom right of cell.
Hover over the square and curser will change to a cross - Left click and drag down to
cell A7. You will now have Monday through to Sunday in cells A1 to A7

Task 2: Left click on cell B1, you will see a square in bottom right of cell.
Hover over the square and curser will change to a cross - Left click and drag down to
cell B7. You will now have the number 3 replicated in cells B1 through to B7

Task 3: Left click and drag from cell C1 to cell C2. Both C1 and C2 should be
highlighted.
You will see a square bottom right. Hover over the square and curser
will change to a cross - left click and drag down to C7. You will now have to numbers
1 to 7 in cells C1 through to C7
USING CELL REFERENCING, FORMULA AND FILL HANDLE TOOL
Task 4: Left click on cell D1 and type =, then left click on cell B1, then type *, then left click
on cell C1, then enter.
Cell D1 will now contain the product
of cell B1 and cell C1. Left click on cell D1, you will see a square in bottom right of
cell. Hover over the square and curser will change to a cross - Left click and drag
down to cell D7.
The formula has been replicated from cell D1 through to cell D7 (ie B1*C1, B2*C2,
B3*C3, B4*C4). This uses the cell update principle (updates cell references in
direction of copy)
USING ABSOLUTE CELL REFERENCING, FORMULA AND FILL HANDLE TOOL

Task 5: Left click on cell E10 and type 10. This will be our data constant.
Left click on cell E1 and type =, then click on D1, then type *, then click on E10, then
press F4 (notice it adds in the $ sign to make it $E$10), then enter.

Cell E1 now contains the product of cell


D1 and the constant in cell E10.
Left click on cell E1, you will see a
square in bottom right of cell. Hover
over the square and curser will change
to a cross - Left click and drag down to
cell E7.
The formula has been replicated from
cell E1 through to cell E7 (ie D1*$E$10,
D2*$E$10, D3*$E$10, D4*$E$10)
The $ sign anchored cell E10 as the formula was replicated, so each is
multiplied by the constant.
USING AUTOSUM AND THE FILL HANDLE TOOL
Task 6: Left click on cell F1. Then left click on HOME from the top bar and
then the autosum symbol Σ.
Cells B1 to E1 should be highlighted, press enter. Cell F1 now contains the sum of
cells B1 through to E1.
Left click on cell F1, you will see a square in bottom right of cell. Hover over the
square and curser will change to a cross - Left click and drag down to cell F7
The formula has been replicated from cell F1 through to cell F7

RENAMING A WORKSHEET

Task 7: Rename the worksheet as Fill Handle. Right click on worksheet


name (sheet1) bottom left, and type Fill Handle

USING FUNCTIONS, fx
Task 8: Type Average in cell A8. Left click on cell D8, then click on fx (if
you can’t find fx, ASK).
Choose ‘average’, then ‘Insert function’.
D1:D7 should be prepopulated in the
Number1 box, if not type it in and ‘done’.
Cell D8 now contains an average of cells D1
to D7

INSERTING A COLUMN, ABSOLUTE CELL REFERENCING AND FILL HANDLE TOOL


Task 9: Left click on F to highlight whole column, right click, ‘insert’ (a new column).

Left click on cell F1, and type =, then left click on E1, then
type *, then click on E10 (the constant), then press F4 (to
anchor E10, ie $E$10), then enter.
Left click on cell F1, you will see a square in bottom right
of cell. Hover over the square and curser will change to a
cross - Left click and drag down to cell F7

HIGHLIGHTING CELLS, ADDING BORDERS AND FILL CELLS


Task 10: Left click and drag from A1 to C7 to highlight, right click and borders
arrow down, left click on all borders. (or format cells, borders)

Then left click and drag from A1 to A7, right click and fill arrow down, left
click on a grey shade. (or format cells, fill)

Left click on cell D8, right click and border arrow down,
left click on ‘top and bottom’
SIMPLE GRAPHS
Task 11: Left click and drag from A1 to A7 to highlight
cells.
Press and hold Ctrl button at the same time
as left click and drag from D1 to D7 to
highlight cells. Cells A1 to A7 and D1 to D7
should be highlighted.
Left click ‘insert’ from top menu, and left click
on ‘line graph’ option, and your chart will
appear.
Left click on ‘Chart Title’ and rename it Line
Graph 1
Left click on graph to highlight it, then right click to bring up menu. Left click on
‘change chart type’, left click on ‘column’ and OK
